Copper Foil

This page will discuss what the different thicknesses and sizes of copper foil are and the different uses of each. Also, the types of copper foil available.

I will rate the foils into the following categories:

Thicknesses

Widths

1/8" - Special

1/8

The 1/8" is used for wrapping thin glass (like Wasser), coins that you might want to solder onto a project, for wrapping thin jewels, and used for small details and to hide small cracks on glass.

5/32" - Special

5/32

Basically the same as above used for slightly thicker glass when the 1/8" isn't wide enough.

3/16" - Advanced

3/16

Can be used on suncatchers, panels, boxes and other general projects.

7/32" - Intermediate

7/32

Basically the same as above. Can use it for special effects in panels such as if you wanted to have a slightly thicker solder bead in the middle of a panel and also can be used for boxes with basic sides(a four-sided box with no seams in the middle of the box - a basic beginner's box) so that there is a place to solder your chain to.

1/4" - Beginner

1/4

Same as above but it can also used for the ends of laser scopes (the decorative beads that are on it), can be used to foil agates, pretty rocks, large shells and miscellaneous.

3/8" - Special/Decorative

3/8

It can be used to simulate stems for plants in panels by foiling certain edges of the glass. It can also be used if you wanted to have a bead on a border such as a suncatchers or a box lid. It is also used to seal to pieces of glass together such as when you want to seal dried flowers or a photograph etc. between glass. Can be used for drapery glass and extra thick glass.

1/2" - Special

1/2

It can be used for very thick glass, very thick folds in drapery, and it can be decorative if you cut shapes off the side of it (for instance using a pinking shears or a decorative edged scissors.)

New Wave Foil - Decorative

New Wave Foil

When applied to edges of the glass, it creates a wavy solder line.

3/4" - Special

Can be used to wrap very thick rods of glass, very, very thick glass and multiple layers of glass at once. Also specialized things like driftwood or large, chunky rocks.

6" - Special

You usually don't see this in the store and I think you can only buy it by the foot but this foil can be used as a foil applique by cutting it into shapes.

12" x 12" Sheets - Special

This can be found in most stores. It can be used in the same way as above.

Colored Foils - Special

These come in black-backed foil for projects that are going to be patinaed black and you don't want to see copper showing through the edge of the glass, silver-backed foil, double silver foil (silvered on both sides) for projects you don't want to tin, and brass foil (general decorative foil) can be used for special applique over the glass like a ribbon or for removable dividers in boxes.
