Once in a village not far from Coventry there was an idiot. The townfolk had a great deal of amusement in demonstrating to visitors his stupidity. To do this they needed only to place, or ask thier guest to place, two coins, a sixpence and a pence before the idiot and tell him to take and keep one. This village idiot would always take the pence. And if asked why he did so, they would say he did it because it was larger than the other. (For just as the nickle is larger than the dime, the pence was larger than the sixpence.) Both the townsfolk and the guest would shake thier heads and laugh at the simple fellow with the smile on his head. One day an all- knowing busy body came to town and was shown the idiot and placed the coins before him as was the custom. The idiot made his usual choice and gave the same explanation as usual. The busy body then lectured the idiot on the nature of currency and advised that the next time he was presented with this choice he should take the sixpence. The idiot looked up at him with two eyes behind which a thought would go mad for lack of society and giggled at the suggestion. "And would I be getting pennies at all if I carried on like that ,now??"
