Roderick Wells-Probable Ancestry

In searching for the parents and ancestry of our early Michigan Roderick Wells, we found a Wells in every port. Greenleaf genealogies stated merely that Polly married Roderick Wells Villenova, New York. Local history stated that he arrived about 1811 and lived there about 25 years. Polly's half-brother, John Greenleaf Jr., lived in Volney, (Sauquoit) Paris, New York. Paris history told nothing. Volney history disclosed nothing about Greenleaf's but did mention a (1) Frederick Wells (1800-1837) born Northfield, Massachusetts. Volney was formerly Fredericksburg, 1807, formerly Mexico; and (2) Ebenezer Wells in 1798. Michigan Hillsdale County history mentions an Albert G. Wells of Moscow who came from Chautauqua County, New York in Feb., 1838. Also a Gideon Wells (no relation) who came to Michigan (Wheatland Township) about 1835 from Caledonia, Orleans County, Vermont, and was a farmer, carpenter, and joiner. He was the son of Ebenezer (born 1779 died Michigan 1854), son of Deacon Selah Wells born 1750 (had brothers and sisters: John Howard, Capt. Ebenezer, Casterson, Wm., Martha and Mary), son of a Rev. William. Wells, an old English preacher who came to Boston in 1793 and to Brattleboro, Vermont. in 1794. (At this time Brattleboro's town clerk was Samuel Greenleaf who married Eunice and had son Stephen).

Brattleboro, Vermont where Roderick was born in 1784 had three prominent Wells families (besides isolated names on lists of soldiers); (1) several William Wells, above, whose 1793 arrived in America rules out relationship; (2) Obadiah Wells whose son, Dr. Henry, with grown children moved to Montague, Mass. in 1781. A grandson of Henry, Dr. Richard Wells, lived in Canadaigua, New York. The date of moving and quite complete records of the family exclude relationship; and (3) Samuel Wells to whom I believe we are connected.

Here are the facts leading to the assumption that we are related to the Samuel Wells family of Brattleboro, Vermont. Samuel Wells and his married sons all lived near Brattleboro at the time of Roderick's birth. A brother of Roderick was born in Canada (1800) during a brief residence there of his parents. The ten adult children of Samuel Wells were granted 1200 acres of land in E. Farnham, Brome County, Quebec, Canada and moved there from 1798-1800. A name "Leonard," a brother (?) of Roderick appears on a Canadian list. The name "Barnard", another brother (?) of Roderick, is the maiden name of three different wives of Samuel's ancestors. The Brattleboro census for heads of families in 1790 listed only: David (Rev., soldier, brother of Samuel, died 1800): John who remained the only Wells listed in 1800: and Oliver, Samuel and Robert (sons of Samuel).

Emma Greenleaf Pierce who was raised by Roderick's son, Abel, gave us the names of Roderick's brothers. As explained below an error was found so there might be some confusion in the other names. However, "Aunt Em" was interested in family and a clear thinker; other information given by her has been accurate and in cases of doubt she said she wasn't sure. These names may quite safely be assumed to have some bearing on Roderick's ancestry. Aunt Em told us that Roderick had two brothers: "Barnard; and a Leonard who married Fanny and had a daughter Harriet who married a Mr. Mathews an editor of a Buffalo, New York newspaper." However, in reading Chautauqua County history, thinking that Roderick's brothers might have lived near Villenova also, we discovered an Austin L. Wells of Westfield, New York born Oct. 6, 1800 in Canada during a brief residence there of his parents. His father was a native of Brattleboro, Vermont. The Family was in Utica, New York in 1810. He was a drummer boy in the War of 1812. Moved to Buffalo 182_. He married Fanny Russell daughter of John Russell of South Wales, Erie County, New York. He moved to Westfield, New York in 1828 where he practiced hatter's trade in partnership with Daniel Rockwell until 1839. He then handled fire and life insurance. Died Thursday Jan. 26,1888 at his home on S. Portage St. His only child, Harriet married James H. Mathews of Buffalo (son was George E. Mathews whose son Burrows Mathews born 1893 is editor of Buffalo "Courier Express"). Since the facts of Austin's life fit the facts Aunt Em gave about Leonard we assume that Austin was a brother of Roderick. Austin's middle initial "L" might stand for Leonard. The name "Leonard Wells" of Farnboro, Brome County, P.Q. appears on an 1835 and a 1875 agriculture list in Taylor's "History of Brome County" page 168. That Leonard might be a brother of Roderick or a namesake of Austin L. A family named Austin was prominent in Brome County, Canada. If connected with this Brattleboro-Canadian family Roderick would be a grandson of Samuel Wells as dates scarcely allow him to be a great grandchild.

Samuel Wells born 1730, Deerfield, Massachusetts and died Aug 6, 1786 Brattleboro, Vermont. He married Hannah Sheldon. He sold his tavern at Deerfield in 1762 and moved to Brattleboro. Lived 1 mile north of east village. Sawmill in 1769: prominent leader in Hampshire Grant trouble on the side of New York: was a Colonel: was a well liked judge of inferior court 1768-72: representative to New York Colonial Assembly 1773-5: as a Tory medium of communication between New York and Canada was forced to flee temporarily to Albany, New York. After close of Revolutionary War each of the eleven surviving children had 1200 acres of land granted them in E. Farnham, Brome County, Quebec, Canada by the crown in recognition of their father's loyalty. They all removed there about 1798-1802. He had 13 children, 2 of which died in infancy. On the "Samuel Galm Associates" patent granted Oct. 22,1798 are ten names: eight are underlined below among Samuel's children and the other two are: "David Wells" and "Reuben Church."

William Wells says Roderick had a brother Samuel who went to Detroit and then to Grand Rapids and was never heard from afterwards.459

home from my work. I see her now coming to meet me, her face beaming with joy.

"But the doctor gave us little encouragement. The least exertion might bring on another hemorrhage. One October morning Jane and I were dressing her [Mary], when she coughed and seemed to choke. One quick look into our faces, but no word passed her lips. She sank into our arms and all was over. Her short sweet life had passed from earth away.

She was educated at Lawrence University, Appleton, Wisconsin and at seventeen announced her career as a teacher, Nov. 26, 1854 she was married to John Warren at Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. They became engaged in farming and in 1863 moved to Minnesota. They have since lived in Rochester, Minnesota, Dakota and in Brownsdale. She was the mother of five children. Besides these she leaves twelve grandchildren and many friends. Her husband and all her sisters and brothers having preceded her into the heavenly kingdom. Mrs. Warren came of ancient lineage, being able to trace her descent for twenty-six generations directly from William the Conqueror. She was also a distant relative of John Greenleaf Whittier the poet, with whom she corresponded in his life time. Descended from a family of scholarly ability she was herself possessed of much talent and in earlier years contributed poems to papers and magazines, among them the Ladies Repository, a Methodist magazine, the Daily Life of Milwandee and the Rochester Post. At the age of 14 she united with the Wesleyan M.E. church. It became her ambition to be a missionary in foreign lands. Her plans in this direction were thwarted by her parents, but she remained ever faithful to her ideals and her God. She received a stroke of paralysis nine years ago and has since gradually declined, since last March having been confined to her bed. The funeral was held at the M.E. church at three o'clock Friday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. Williamson. Below is a poem composed by Mrs. Warren some years ago.423

T.S. Eliot

Thomas Stearns Eliot is one of the most significant and recognized literary figures of the 20th century. Born in the St. Louis, Missouri in 1888, he became a British citizen and devout Catholic as an adult. Perhaps most often remembered for The Wasteland, Eliot is commonly associated with the 19th century French Symbolists, such as Stéphane Mallarmé, as well as the 17th century Metaphysical poets, such as John Donne. Eliot himself worked to trace his lineage to Dante, often quoting the poet in his own verse.

T.S. Eliot is simply this century's greatest poet in the English language.

He is not its most enjoyable on a first reading--that would be Frost. Nor is he its most successful pioneer of sound and language--I allow that to Stevens.

But his poetry, more than any other writer of any period, presents a path to the reader, a complicated but ulimately coherent development of thought and character. Each of his long poems, from 1917's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" to 1946's "Little Gidding," the last of the Four Quartets, builds upon the last, sorting through the logical problems it posed and weeding out, in an honest and frank way, the instances of faulty thinking. And what is most amazing is that, by Four Quartets, the reader finds that he, like Eliot, has arrived somewhere.

Taking on the most obvious and profound problems and dissatisfactions of the modern era, Eliot offers what only the great religious texts have: hope and faith, and not at the expense of intelligence and reason. His poetry suggests that despair is the ultimate intellectual cop-out.

In this alignment of poetry and hope, Eliot has much in common with contemporary French poet Yves Bonnefoy, and my thesis is a consideration and comparison of the two writers.

ELIOT, T.S. (1888-1965). "I am an Anglo-Catholic in religion, a classicist in literature, and a royalist in politics." T.S. Eliot so defined, and even exaggerated, his own conservatism. The ideas of this stimulating writer were perhaps traditional, but the way in which he expressed them was extremely modern. Eliot was one of the first to reject conventional verse forms and language. His experiments with free expression contributed to his reputation as one of the most influential writers of his time.

Thomas Stearns Eliot was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on Sept. 26, 1888. His family had produced distinguished Americans since colonial days. He entered Harvard University in 1906, completed his course in three years, and earned a master's degree the next year. After a year at the Sorbonne in Paris, he returned to Harvard. Further study led him to Merton College, Oxford, and he decided to stay in England. He worked first as a teacher and then in a bank. Precise and moderate in his habits, he devoted his evenings to study and writing. He liked cats and wrote a book about them--'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats', published in 1939. It was the basis for 'Cats', a spectacular musical comedy of the 1980s.

In 1915 the verse magazine Poetry published Eliot's first notable piece, 'The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock'. This was followed by other short poems such as 'Portrait of a Lady'. 'The Waste Land', which appeared in 1922, is considered by many to be his most challenging work (see American Literature).

In 1927 Eliot became a British subject and was confirmed in the Church of England. His essays ('For Lancelot Andrewes', 1928) and his poetry ('Four Quartets', 1943) increasingly reflected this association with a traditional culture.

His first drama was 'The Rock' (1934), a pageant play. This was followed by 'Murder in the Cathedral' (1935), a play dealing with the assassination of Archbishop Thomas a Becket, who was later canonized (see Becket). 'The Family Reunion' appeared in 1939. 'The Cocktail Party', based upon the ancient Greek drama 'Alcestis' by Euripides, came out in 1950 and 'The Confidential Clerk' in 1953. The dialogue in his plays is written in a free, rhythmical verse pattern. Eliot won the Nobel prize for literature in 1948 and other major literary awards. The author was married twice. He died on Jan. 4, 1965, in London.
