From Art as the Evolution of Visual Knowledge 1948 by Charles Biederman

At about this . . . time the realistic trend in art gained fresh impetus, as Chambers points out, in the new discoveries about nature by Leibnitz, a scientist and logician, who was not content merely to appeal to the Greeks and their logic, but rather sought directly to understand the world . . . (etc).  After a lecture in which Leibnitz discussed the non-sameness of all objects in nature, it is said that he asked his audience to walk out to the lawn and examine the blades of grass.  Everyone was astonished to find that no blade of grass was exactly like any others.33
