Victoria Welby

Lady Welby to William James

'Indeed, I am really an aboriginal pragmatist, for, many years ago—long before the name came into use—I was seeing more and more clearly that 'intellectualism' was now feeding upon husks and turning upon itself, engendering nothing but fresh and abortive controversy ;' (etc)37

Mr. Charles S. Peirce,
Milford, Penn.

My Dear Sir:—
We have selected a few men of prominence to whom we send copies of Lady Welby's pamphlet, which she has sent to us for private distribution. She is a woman of high standing in the English aristocracy, having a place among the scientists of Old England, being honored with the personal friendship of such men as the late Romanes, Professor C. Lloyd Morgan, Oliver Lodge, and many others.

If you interest in the book, she will doubtless be pleased to receive a few lines in acknowledgement set to her personally.   Her address is The Hon. Lady Victoria Welby, Denton Manor, Grantham, Eng.

Very truly yours,
The Open Court Publishing Co.
