BATTLEFIELD 1942: SECRET WEAPONS REVIEW | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The map: Kbely Airfield in Germany; Orders: defend the secret jet weapons at all costs. The British are hammering at the barbed wire gates of your armed and heavily defended compound. Your battle-hardened combat pilots take a seat in the new Natter rocket planes, doing all they can to repel the British assault. You and your comrades realize you have to do something to protect the Fuhrer's secret weopons. You find jetpacks in the hangers and strap them on, thinking this will be your last flight. You fly out over the barbed wire to the surprise of the British ("Crikey!"), launching grenades into their midst. Mass confusion ensues as they open fire at these flying demons. Unfortunately (If you are a German) these jetpacks only have about ten seconds of air time maximum. You fall to the ground and the British swarm over you. The allies take the airfield, engineers sent in to destroy the mysterious aircraft. An Allied vicotry! This story dictates a situation only possible with the second expansion pack in the popular Battlefield 1942 series. It adds vehicles and weopons that (most) are more fiction than fact. Have you ever seen a picture of Germans flying over the British in jetpacks?! It sounds like something out of the far future. Apparently, some of it did happen in World War II, or so EA says. I know for a fact that Nazis launched explosive rockets on London, but that is the least far-fetched fact. But Battlefield 1942 was never wholly focused on realism was it? It is about fighting fierce, historically accurate World War II battles in action packed multiplayer games. In this case, Secret Weopons adds way more action to the game, including seven new vehicles, eight new maps, two new army types: the British Commando and the German Elite, but the main (and best) part of this expansion pack is the objective mode. You (usually as Allied) are given a mission and must accomplish it. The missions usually involve destroying something, or blowing something up with ExPacks. You can infiltrate Hitler's mountain retreat in the Alps, and steal his secret documents from a highly guarded safe, or you can destroy the huge concrete emedded rocket base at Mimoyecques. These maps, like the ones in Road to Rome, focus highly on teamwork if you plan to achieve victory. Once again, this can be hard to do with a team full of new recruits, but with a group of Battlefield veterans, it can be a blast (literally). The new hand weopons are fun to use, like the German automatic sniper rifle, the Auto 5 shotgun, or the British Commando throwing knife, which kills apon impact. Grenade launchers are included, but do not seem to add much more power or distance. When you try to aim the Mauser K98 Grenade Launcher, the grenades mostly explode in the air, before they reach their target. Some of the maps are not as fun to play as the Road to Rome maps, unless you have friends or a clan that work together on the objective mode. Unfortunately, not many people are playing online with the new maps, and I still haven't played a few maps on multiplayer simply because there are no servers running them, and if there are they are usually empty. You just can't rate the game on single player performance, because Battlefield doesn't really have a single player game. The price is a tad expensive for the content, $40 Canadian can buy you a decent game these days. 85% - Price is a little more than it should be, and more thought could have gone into the maps and vehicles, but it is still a must for the more-than-casual Battlefield fan |
