BATTLEFIELD 1942 REVIEW

Battlefield 1942 is a spectacular game. It mixes a blend of cinematic realism with a heavy dose of multiplayer action. This game was voted Game of the Year for 2002 bye many companies such as Gamespy, PC Gamer, and various other gaming websites. This isn't a game based on realism, though, as if it were real, all there would be was death every time you walked somewhere. No, this game is based on pure multiplayer mayhem.         Maybe it is unrealistic if a soldier gets hit with a sniper rifle in the chest and doesn't die, but if that would happen, snipers would be abundant all over the map. But if you are looking for realistic action, then you have the wrong game. The planes are beautifully rendered and give you exactly what you would witness in real life, as with the jeeps, ships, and guns.        Coming with the game are sixteen maps, all with lots of effort put into them. But there are literally hundreds of mods out there that people are playing that add new elements and maps. Thousands of custom maps are submitted weekly to file networks, and EA sends out new maps with almost every patch. I take back what I said earlier, if you want realism, this game is for you. There is a mod called Forgotten Hope that is much loved by community members for bringing added realism to the game.       The community for this game is awesome. New mods are being announced every day, right now I have twenty mods in my Battlefield folder! All of them are different and have unique attributes. One of my favorites is Eve of Destruction, of EoD. It brings the jungles of Vietnam to life. Another good thing about this mod is that it forces the developers of the recent sequel, Battlefield: Vietnam, to try very hard to make their game worth the money. EoD is a free release you can download off the internet, while Battlefield: Vietnam you have to pay $50 CDN or $40 US if you want to get it.       There are a total of four modes in BF1942; Conquest, Capture the Flag, Team Death Match, and Cooperative. Most people on the internet just play conquest mode, but there are a few servers playing the other modes. On conquest, you have to conquer the control points and hold them. On some maps, you have to hold at least half, on others, you have to hold them all, it varies along with the maps. In capture the flag, both teams start off with relatively equal territory, and sometimes there is a point in the middle to capture. The middle point just gives you a foothold on capturing the enemy flag. So what you have to do is run to the enemy's flag, grab the flag by running into it, then hurrying back to your own flag while trying not to die. There are many different tactics for this mode. Manouvers such as plane swaps, expacking the flag, and pickups. In team death match, your entire team gains points for each kill, and loses points for each death. Likewise for the other team. In co-op, you and your comrades play against the AI either on your team or against them.        Sadly, the AI in this game is pitifully bad. Tanks don't shoot at you yet point their turrets straight at your head. But other times the machine guns will have a perfect bead on you plane at a high altitude and going very fast. You get shot down in ten seconds!

Battlefield 1942 is worth your money whether you are looking for a realistic World War II first person shooter, or are just looking for pure action. The poor AI is made up greatly by the spectacular multiplayer mayhem.

The maps are huge, this is just one island out of many on the Philippines map.
If this is not beautiful, I don't know what is.

There are many snipers around. Don't expect any more bullets from this German scout.
