The earliest known relative of the family is Harriet Butler (1798 - 1894). Believed to have been descendent from the Butler's of Southern Maryland.  Born in Saint Mary's County, almost nothing is known of her early life but some information has been learned.
She was married to John Butler of which no concrete information is known at this time.  It is believed that she was descendent of Eleanor Butler an Irish Indentured Servant who was inported to work for Lord Baltimore about 1600.  In 1661, Eleanor married a negro slave known as the "Negro Charles".  Irish Nell as she was known, had at least two descendents, William and Mary Butler who sued for their freedom in Maryland in 1770.

Harriett Butler resided in the District of Columbia for approximately fourty years prior to her death in 1894.  Her residence in Washington is located under a variety of street names and are reported in Popes Directory as Louisa Alley, NW; 1527 M Street, NW and 1527 Corcoran Alley, NW.  She was also located working in Georgetown, Washington as a cook.  Family lore says when she was initially freed, she worked cleaning bricks for Metropolitan AME Church located on M Street, NW.

Family lore says she worked by cleaning bricks for Metropolitan AME Church, one of the largest and the oldest African American Methodist Churches in Washington, DC.; She died on January 24, 1894 at her residence and was interred at Mt. Olivet Cemetary, a Roman Catholic Cemetary in Washington, DC. ; The cause of death is listed as old age.
