Computer hardware is the physical part of a cumputer, including the
the digital circuitry, as distinguished from the computer software that executes within the hardware.
Firmware is a special type of software that rarely, if ever, needs to be changed
and so is stored on hardware devices such Read-Only Memory (ROM)
where it is ot readily change (and is, therefore, "firm" rather than "soft").
Most computer hardware is not seen ny normal users. It is embedded systems in Automobiles, Microwave Ovens
Electrocardiograph Machines, Compact Disc Players and Other devices
Personal Computes, the Computer Hardware familiar to most people, form only a small minority of Computers
The term also tends to be applied to devices that are hooked up externally, typically through some
form of computer bus like USB (Universal Sync Bus).
Typical examples include Joy-Sticks, Printers and Scanners. Devices such as Monitors
and Disk-Drives are not considered peripherals when they are truly optional.
Some people do not consider internal devices such as Video Capture Cards to be Peripherals because
they are added insided the Computer case; for them, the term peripheral is reserved exclusively
for devices that are hooked externally the Computer, is debateable however whether
PCMCIA Cards qualify as Periferals under this restriction definition, because some of them go fully
inside the laptop, while some; like WiFi Cards, have external appendages.
Computer software consists of programs or instructions that enable a coputer to perform specific tasks,
as opposed to its physicalo components (hardware) which can only do the tasks they are echanically
designed for. The term includes application software such as word processors which
perform productive tasks for users, system software such as operating systems, which
interfaces with hardware to run the necessary services for user-interfaces and
applications, and middleware which controls and co-ordinates distributed systems.
The Internet is a a worldwide, publicly accessible network of interconnected compter networks
that transmit data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protcol (IP).
It is a "network of networks" that consists of millinons of smaller domestic, academic, personal, business
and government networks, which together carry varios information and services, such as electronic mail,
online chat, file transfer and the intelinked webpages and other documents of the World Wide Web.
Experts in the field of networking debate whether two or more computers that are connected together
using some form of communications medium constitute a network. Therefor, some works stat that a network
requires three connected computers. One such source, "Telecommunications: Glossary of Telecommication Terms"
states that a computer network is "A network of data processing nodes that are interconnected for the pyrpose
of data communication".
The term "network" being defined in the same document as "An interconnection of three or more communicating
entitles". A computer connected to a non computing device (e.g., networked to a printer via an Ethernet link)
may also represent a computer network, although this article does not address this configuration.
Networking, Routers, Routing Protocols and networking over the public Internet have their specifications defined
in documents called RFC's.
Commicating computer systems constitute a computer network and these networks generally involve at least two devices
capable of heing networked with at least one usually being a computer.
The devices can be separated by a few meters (e.g., via Bletooth)
or nearly unlimited distances e.g. via the Internet. Computer networking is sometimes considered a sub-discipline
of telecommications and sometimes of computer science, information technology and computer engineering.
Computer networks rely heavily upon the theoretical and practical application of these scientific
and engineering disciplines. A computer network is any set of computers or devices connected to each other e.g.
(network) Internet, or a small home local area network (LAN) with two computers connected with standard
networking cables connecting to a Network Interface Card.
All modern aspects of the Publlic Swiched Telephone Network (PSTN)
are computer-controlled, and telephony increasingly runs over the Internet Protocol (IP)
although not necessarily the public Internet.
Computer main memmory comes in two principal varieties: Random Access Memmory (RAM) and
Read Only Memmory (ROM). RAM can be read and written to anytime to the Central Processing Unit (CPU)
commands it, but ROM is pre-loaded with dat and software that never changes, so the CPU
can only read its content.
ROM is typically used to store the computer's initial start-up instructions.
In general the contents of RAM is erased when the power to the computer de-activated
(turned off) while ROM retains its data indefinitely.
In a PC, the ROM conatins a specialized program called the BIOS (Basic Input Output)
that orchestrates loading the computer's operating system from the Hard Disk Drive
into RAM whenever the computer all of the software required to perform the task may
be stored in ROM. Software that is stored in ROM is often called firmware because it is
notably more like Hardware than Software.
Flash Memmory blurs the distincion between ROM and RAM by retaining data
when turned off but being rewritable like RAM. However, Flash Memmory is typically much
slower than conventional ROM and RAM so its use is restricted to applications
wherehigh speeds are not required.

Interface (Small Computer System Interface)
Apple adopted an industry standard technology called SCSI for its MacIntosh
(Apple) computers., it was a standard that
applied to Desktops, Servers and Mainframe computers. Computer makers, however followed
a path of tricks and gimmicks to design the lowest cost disk attachment.
The simplest possible electronic interface was a chip that duplicated exactly the mainboard I/O
bus available at the time. A simple 40 wire cable connected this chip to locic chips on the disk.
The mainboard bus had been introduced on the IBM P.C - AT in 1985, so the disk
connection became known as an AT attachment or "ATA". It is also popularly known as "IDE" but
some manufacturers claimed that as a trademark, barring its use as an official name.
Then a dozen years passed and each year the chips got twice as smart as the year before.
ATA evolved from an 8-Mhz. connection to a 133-Mhz. connection and became smart enough to
handle other types of devices. However, the physical connectors and programming interface
had to build on and remain compatible with an idea that some engineers developed to
build the lowest cost possible interface based on the primitive electronics available at
that moment in time.
However todays computers are transitioning to a new simpler and higher speed interface called ATA.

Computer Hardware Service
Charge (Estimations)
The charges are relative to the prelimanary shop, home or office service charges and not to
be confused with completed setup, repair or maintenance costs, however these
assuming not the final cost due to circumstances, will be
deducted from the completed service bill (assuming component and or
system recieves completed service).
Depending on the usage of a computer system, with-in a period of time, the machine will begin
to perform slower and often less accurate than it did when purchased. This is due to
many factors, one specifically is component deterioration.
PCMEE Productions will come to your home and or office to diagnose the computer (system) problem,
recommend and perform the neccesary services to correct your systems performance and upon request
setup your system to automatically initiate some of the neccesary preventative maintenance services.
I have denoted ten general basics to assist you in the general maintenance of your system, assuming
complications exists beyond these circumstances its time for a technician.

P.C Maintenance Tips
Never Shut Off P.C Manually
Never, never, turn your computer off with the power switch until Windows has shut down.
The one exception to this rule is when your computer locks up and your hard drive is not running
(hard drive light is not blinking). In this situation, you can turn the power off without harmful
effects to the hard drive. As cutting the power can also result in lost data or Windows files,
you should only do this when you have to.
Following this rule will prevent permanent hard drive defects caused by the hard drive heads contacting the surface of the drive disc, and it will prevent a host of Windows problems.
Whenever possible, recover from crashes by pressing the Ctrl + Alt + Delete keys at the same time. Press them again to reboot your computer.
Emergency Power Source
I highly recommend that you purchase an UPS (uninteruptable power supply) for your computer.
This will keep your computer from crashing during power outages, and will protect your computer
from low and high voltage occurrences.
An UPS is far superior to a surge protector and will save your computer from almost any power type
of disaster. (See #1 above for what happens when your computer crashes.)
Backup Files
Backup, backup, backup, any data you cannot afford to lose to at least two separate physical drives.
So backup data to floppies, Zip disks, CD-RWs etc.
The time to backup is when you create something you can't afford to lose. Don't wait until tomorrow.
Scan-Disk Defragmentation
Run Scandisk and Defragment at least once a month. This will keep your hard drive healthy and prevent
crashes. Alternatively, purchase Norton Utilities and use it to keep your hard drive healthy.
Remove Power
Never unplug peripherals from the computer when it is powered up. Unplugging with the power on can
short out the connector socket or the motherboard. The only exception to this rule is if you know a peripheral is "hot pluggable". If you do not know what
"hot pluggable" means then ignore this exception.
Reserve Space On HDD
Do keep at least 100 MBs of your C: drive free for Windows to use. If you use Windows Me or
Windows XP then you should have 200 MBs of free space on your C: drive.
If you do not have enough free space you will choke Windows and it will start dumping data
to your hard drive, or it will just get really, really, slow.
Use the ADD/Delete tool in the Windows Control Panel to delete unneeded programs from your drive.
You can also use Cleansweep included in Norton Utilities to clean up your drive. If you do use
Cleansweep or another hard drive cleaner, do not delete shared files unless you back them up.
The cleaners do a rotten job of knowing if another program uses shared files.
Allow P.C To Completely Boot
Do not let a lot of programs load up when you start your computer. They use valuable memory
and Windows Resources (Windows internal workspace).
All programs in your Windows System Tray (in the lower left of your screen) are running
on your computer. Close them if you don't need them or run them and configure them not to
load when you boot up. Other programs running in the background can be found by pressing
Ctrl + Alt + Delete at the same time.
Use Anti-Virus Protection
The best type of protection is continuous monitoring from a dedicated anti-virus program (Norton/McAffee).
The second best thing is to use is the free online virus checker (Housecall - Trend Micro).
Firewall Your Internet Connection
If you have a high speed Internet connection you need a firewall program. A firewall program keeps
those who want to hijack your computer from gaining access to your system. You really do not want
someone else running your computer.
I suggest you purchase and run Norton's Personal Firewall program. Your firewall should boot up
with your computer to protect it from invasion. A free personal firewall program is available from Tiny Software.
Case in point: When I run Windows Me for 10 hours or more with my DSL connection, my computer is
usually attacked by a hacker at least once. Do not think you are safe from hackers!! Hackers use
search programs to seek out computers at random. Get a firewall program and use it.
Retain Your Origional Software
Keep track of the software disks you receive with your computer and new peripherals.
These disks contain valuable software drivers and programs for Windows and are needed when
Windows must be reloaded. Keep these disks and your Windows software disks in a safe, dry, place --
you never know when you will need them.
Printhead Maintenance Tips
Printheads are not inexpensive, throwaway items. They are sensitive electronic components,
and mishandling and abuse can cause irreparable damage and shorten printhead life.
Proper care and maintenance will prolong the life of your printhead.
1.
Always use the lowest heat setting possible.
2.
Always print at the lowest speed possible.
3.
Do not touch the printhead anywhere except the edges. Fingers and foreign objects can scratch the printhead.
4.
Use only quality label stock and thermal transfer ribbons.
Poor quality label media and ribbons will cause excessive wear and build-up.
General Data's label stock and thermal transfer ribbons are ideal for long printhead life.
5.
Always use a ribbon that is the same size as the printhead. (ie. 6" printer needs a 6" ribbon).
Using a ribbon smaller than the printhead can cause abrasions and scratches.
6.
Clean the printhead after each ribbon roll has been used. Follow the instructions supplied with your printer.
7.
Do not attempt printhead replacement or any other printer repairs if you are not qualified to do so.
Improper installation or repair can cause serious damage to the printer.
8.
When your printer needs a new printhead, contact General Data Service.
