How to Write a Sentence

Simple Sentence (noun + verb + modifiers)

Compound Sentence (noun + verb + modifiers, and noun + verb + modifiers)

Complex Sentence (If noun + verb + modifiers, noun + verb + modifiers)

Whenever you write a sentence, concentrate on the subject (a noun) of the idea.  In other words, what are you writing about?  Then select the action of the subject (a verb).  I other words what are you going to say about the subject?

Example:

I am writing about “beauty.”

I start with my subject:

Beauty

Next I think about what I want to say about beauty.

can be found

So now I have a noun + verb structure.

Finally, I complete the idea.  I am simply adding modifiers.

only in the right places

I now have a complete sentence:

Beauty can be found only in the right places.

I turn my simple sentences into compound sentences when I combine them with a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or)—don’t forget the comma.

I turn my simple sentences into complex sentences when I combine them with a subordinating conjunction (when, because, if, although, etc.).
