A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CHURCH IN PLAIN DEALING
The Church of Christ in the Plain Dealing area was first organized
on the 28th day of August, 1875. It was located 1-1/2 miles south
of the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bossier parish, Louisiana, which
is approximately five miles southeast of Plain Dealing.
The little log church house was known as Union Hill
and was set in order by Elder E.M. Northern. There were nine members
and the Bible was taken as the rule and guide of their faith and
practice. Brother Northern continued to preach for about two years, and
gathered several into the church.
After Brother Northern stopped visiting the church, Brother W.F. Breedlove
from Arkansas visited once a month for two years, during which time several
more became obedient to the gospel. Brother J.B. Davis of Arkansas visited
once a month for two years.
It was about 1885 that the church went to work and built a new house north
of the little log church house, and changed the name from Union Hill to
Pleasant Hill.
The Pleasant Hill Church of Christ moved to Plain Dealing in the summer of
1944. A tent meeting was conducted by Brother Gussie Lambert on the
southwest corner of Perrin and Mary Lee streets. The church met for a
short time in the old City Hall with Brother Carroll C. Hartsell preaching
on Sunday, then moved to the school auditorium for about six months with
Brother Harper as the preacher.
It was the Fall of 1945 when the first church building was built at the
present location on East Palmetto Street in Plain Dealing. In 1958, the
church moved into their new building at the same location.
