p e a c e v i l l e NEWS & INFO FOR & ABOUT THE PEACE COMMUNITY OF NASHVILLE & MIDDLE TENNESSEE
WHEREAS: the massive sums which will be required fo military engagement would be far better addressing crisis conditions (which are themselves a serious threat to our national security) in Nashville and other urban centers; and WHEREAS: committing American troops to Iraq will put in harm's way citizens of Nashville, a disproportionate number of them racial and ethnic minorities from our city's most economically deprived neighborhoods; and WHEREAS: the administration has failed to present conclusive evidence of a clear and present danger to our national security, even in secret session with the congressional leadership; and WHEREAS: the military action has the potential, according to numerous experts, to destabilize the Middle East and thereby requiring a continual U.S. military presence for the foreseeable future; and WHEREAS: the expenditures necessary for this purpose will result in reductions in investment in the domestic economy with a resultant deterioration in public infrastructure; and WHEREAS: the expenditures will result in ballooning deficits further weakening the already sluggish state economy and thereby insuring further reductions in state aid to Nashville; and WHEREAS: the overall cost of the war is likely to be $100 billion, according to the National Priorities Project; and WHEREAS: Tennessee's share would be an estimated $1.3 billion; and WHEREAS: the climate of fear and war hysteria has emoved from public scrutiny numerous issues of public concern; WHEREAS: this climate also prevents sufficient public attention being given to economic and environmental threats to Nashville's quality of life. WHEREAS: war with Iraq will only continue the suffering of the Iraqi people that resulted from the last war and continued sanctions, which, according to the United Nations, has led to the death of more than 500,000 Iraqi children NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Nashville City Council opposes any military action against Iraq by the United States. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, duly adopted, shall be sent to President George W. Bush, U.S. Senators Bill Frist and Lamar Alexander and all members of the Tennessee US Congressional delegation.

To be a patriot, one had to say, and keep on saying, "Our country, right or wrong," and urge on the little war. Have you not perceived that that phrase is an insult to the nation? -Mark Twain
Peace is not the product of terror or fear. Peace is not the silence of cemeteries. Peace is not the silent result of violent repression. Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the good of all. Peace is dynamism. Peace is generosity. It is right and it is duty. -Oscar Romero
