Queens of the stone age started life as stoner rockers Kyuss, Kyuss' line up was constantly changing but one of its mainstays was Josh Homme there gutarist there was also John Garcia After Nick left they had a couple of bass players in Brant Bjork came and went and was replaced by Alfredo Hernandez Kyuss eventually split and after a split EP with Queens of the stone age(queens was in fact just Josh homme doing most of it with drummer vic the stick and a small time bass player njamed vic conner. After the split EP Josh turned Queens into a permanent band with one time Kyuss drummer Alfredo Hernandez and getting old bass player Nick Oliveri in to first record another Split EP with beaver and in October 1998 release there first album Self titled after spending eighteen months on the road with Bad Religion, Rage against the machine and the smashing pumpkins oh and Hole but less said about that the better. In 1999 hernandez left to have a whirlwind romance with Natasha Noble using whips and leather..and Nick and Josh decided to act as a twosome. Hiring different session musicians. To do there next album Rated R which they released in 2000 which inlcuded screaming trees and Judas priests Rob Halford they appeared at the reading festivals and a secret show afterwards in which Josh Homme appeared on stage naked. There Album Rated R gets re-released and gets raving reviews. After this they retreat to the Studio to work on there next full length studio album which would again include Mark Lanegan who was now a full time member of QOTSA Dave Grohl was asked to work on a couple of tracks but after the other drummer went missing they asked Dave to complete the album which he did. They released Songs for the deaf in august where it got to number four a very good place for an album of its kind and since then they have been touring non stop and have been joined by Troy van Leeuwen ( a perfect circle) on slide guitar rythem guitar and keyboards and Joey Castillo (ex- Danzig) Drums.
