Patrick and Elizabeth Kendrick
lived in Russell and Tazewell Counties, VA
He lived right on the
Russell, Tazewell Co line, I believe the property was in,U> both counties, at
the foot of House & Barn Mountain. I have not cofirmed this through land
records which may be in both counties. This is the same property that John
Garland Hurt and James's daughter Salina lived on. John Garland Hurt died in
1889 and is buried on this property along with his wife Salina. Their
children lived there until the the boys married and moved away and one of
the daughters, Corrie continued to live there with her husband William
Maynard. After her death Corrie's daughter Charlotte continued to live there
with her husband William Peters until her death in 1995? (I have the date).
The house passed to her daughter Suzanne who lives in California and she
cleaned it out. As far as I know, it sits vacant. When John Garland Hurt
moved there with his family (probably at his marriage in 1866) it was a log
house. He doubled the size of the house and built beautiful walnut mantles
over the fire places in the log part. When I visited, the log part was the
living room and upstairs was a bedroom. The new part was another bedroom on
both floors. A kitchen was added in the back of the house but there was no
bathroom until probably the 1950's. The house was constructed in such a way
that to get upstairs in the new part from upstairs in the old part you had
to come downstairs and go up another set of stairs. Some of the funrishing
were said to have been brought by the Kendrick family from eastern Virginia.
I have pictures of an ancient hall tree with a petticoat mirror that was
lovely. There was a huge grand piano the square type that passed to aniece.
There was also a spinning wheel that was said to have been the first
spinning wheel in Russel County.
