The last-born son of Nepelle the first Moon Stallion, Tirilli lived in hiding and was one of the best-kept secrets of the south. He was born under the Pilot to a mealy-nosed sooty bay mare, and has since claimed the high, weird silver forest as his own. There he roams alone, appearing only occasionally as a wraith-like shadow, half-seen and only half-believed.
Tirilli's dam raised him on the slopes of the Pilot, but never took him all the way to the top, and she avoided other horses, fearing to take her son into the herds in case he was killed by another stallion, jealous of his strange colour and mysterious breeding.
So Tirilli grew up cautious and wary, and when he was a yearling he left his dam to see what was at the top of the mountain where he had grown up.
To his surprise, he found a forest of stunted silvery pale eucalypts that had grown twisting with the wind and been burnt and frozen in their streaming positions. Somehow he felt at home there, and it kept him hidden from prying eyes.
But in the summer of his second year, he found something he had not expected in a small gully he sometimes liked to sleep in when the winds became too strong: two mares of unusual hues - one almost his own colour!
The seal brown silver Warreeah captivated him, as her presence suggested to Tirilli that there were others like himself, and over the following seasons he often went back to glance in on the little gully to be sure the two mares were still there and were doing alright. He tried to be sure he was not seen, but wondered if the two young mares sensed his presence.
Then one day in spring, he looked into the gully - and two foals were at the mares' sides, drinking milk and coloured a fantastic pale gold. He was awestruck, and yet he still tried desperately to keep himself hidden, even more determined now not to disturb these mares who obviously belonged to someone else - probably someone whose coat shone like the sun on snow...
So Tirilli began to gather his courage, though he was unaware of it at the time, and when he came back to the gully one day to find it empty, and tracks leading down the slope, he knew it was time for him to go out into the mountains and find out more about the young mare who seemed so much like himself, even gather a herd of his own. After all, he was three years old, and should not a three-year-old be starting to collect a band of mares?
Now, as Tirilli the young chocolate silver stallion of the Moon begins his search for the truth about himself, he is unaware of the leagcy of mystery that runs in his blood, and is unprepared for what he will discover. But his determination to know of the line that spawned him urges him on when everything else tells him to give up and go home.
All he knows is that there are others like him, and he must find them to know himself.
