Glossary of important dates in Penobscot Maine
                       1759 - 1987
1759      General Pownal supervised the construction of a fort on the west bank of the penobscot river,  Now Fort Point
1759      The Gray brothers explored the territory now know as Hancock County
1761      The first permanent settlers arrived, twenty families in all
1762      Twelve plantations (of which Penobscot was #3) were granted by the Provincial Court of Massachusetts.
1763-4   84 families arrived and permanently established themselves in Majorbagaduce.
1776      Declaration of war with England
1779     The English take posession of Majorbagaduce ( now Castine peninsula, then called Pentagoet) and the Americans
              make an unsucessful attempt to recapture it.  Fort George and other batteries built.
1783      Peace with Englend.  The Rev. Isaac Case was the first ordained minister to preach in Majorbagaduce.
1785      Title to Plantation #3 confirmed by the General Court.  Survey of Plantation made by John Peters and Jeremiah Wardwell.
1787      Town of Penboscot Incorporated on February 23rd and organized April 18th at house of Col.Gabriel Johanot.
1790      Hancock County established.  Penobscot made a shire town.
1791      Serious consideration given for an educational system.
1793      First religious society formed
1794      Hancock Lodge F & AM chartered
1795      Rev. Johathan Powers called to be the first settled minister.  
1796      Penobscot lost the "Peninsula" when Castine was made into a separate township.  Castine made a shire town.
1801      The first church built in Penobscot of Methodist denomination
1807      The first brickyard established by Falls Wardwell
1809      The first schoolhouse was built by Jeramiah Wardwell on Perkins hill
              (  this is debateable, since recent research discloses a 1795 date on  the Devereux school chimney)
1812      Declaration of war against England on June 18th
1817       Penobscot lost additional territory when Brooksville was incorporated,  also an additional part of Penobscot
               (North Castine area) added to Castine.
1820      Province of Maine becomes a state and separates from Massachusetts
1823      A Baptist Church is built on land of Daniel Perkins.
1824      Arrival of first steamboat  at Castine
1836      Town house built in Penobscot.
1837      The North Penobscot Methodist Church was constructed.
1844       A Methodist Church was built near the So.Penobscot, Brooksville Town Line
1856      The first sawmill owned and operated by Herrick was constructed.
               A Baptist Church built and located by Winslows Cove (now known as Bagaduce Hall)
1858       A Methodist Church built at the head of the bay,  dedicated in 1859
1866      William Hutchings died, May 3rd, aged 101yrs, 6 months.
1867      The  schooner JULIET TILDEN lost off the coast of Amherst, one of the Magdalen Islands in the gulf of St. Lawrence
               All hands lost including two Penobscot men.
1868      The schooner   ADDIE CLEMENTS   built in Penobscot.
1873       A daily mail route was established between Bucksport and Sargentville, passing through Penobscot.
1876      A copper mine is being operated by on Dan Webster's Hill
1880      Grist mills now in operation below Peirce's Pond and Mill Creek
1887      Centennial celebration held for Penobscot
1889      A free High School was established.  Arthur Littlefield, Teacher
              Grey's steamboat line established between West Brooksville and Bangor
1893       Penobscot's first telephone communication to Ellsworth is established.
              U.S. Government dredges a deep channel into Winslow's cove
1898      Dr.Melvin Wardwell opens medical practice in Penobscot
1899      The South Penobscot Baptist Church was built and located at the cove
1903      Rural Free Delivery of the mail began on October 14,   Lewis Snow was carrier.
1905      The South Penobscot RFD began,  George Staples, carrier
1908      The automobile begin to make their debut
1910      Arthur Perkins sawmill constructed at the bay
1912     Clark High School organized through the influence of Winfred Clark.
1917      United States joins forces with England and France in WW1
1920      Electricity is now enjoyed in the somes and on the streets of Penboscot
1922       Several people own radios in town
1929      The Stock Market crashes on Wall Street, we are entering an era of great depression
1941       Seaboard Paper Co. in Bucksport employs many from Penobscot
               WWII  breaks out between Japan, Germany, and the United States.  Many of out young men are involved.
1945      The first atomic bomb deployed over Hiroshima on August 6th,
              The second over Nagasaki 10 days later.
1947      Television is now commercial project and enjoyed by all.
1951      War is declared with Korea,  United States join force with South Korea to prevent spread of Communism
1953      The new Penobscot Community Elementary School is opened for classes on October 3rd.
1954      Clark High School graduated it last class.
1960      The space age opens with President Kennedy's challenge to put a man on the moon before the next decade
1962      John Glenn first man to orbit the earth in space
1963      Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldr n step foot on and walk over the moon's surface,  Television coverage impressive
1970      We are engaged in an undeclared war with Vietnam and have been since 1962 to prevent the spread of communism
1987      Penobscot Bi-Centennial celebration.
