Penobscot's Centennial Poem Written by: Rev.Harrison Wardwell, ( 1887 ) |
Friends, Citizen's, all hail today Centennial honors here we pray. Hail ! Fair Penobscot by the sea; With freedoms flag and athem's A hundred years have o'r thee rolled Town of the valiant and the bold Since thou was born, since thou was named, Since first the sun upon thee flamed; Since first the moonlight's silvery glow Fell on the wooded hills below, Since first the starlight kissed the tide. Of your blue bay, where white sails glide. Thou art the same, yet not the same. As when thou first didst take thy name, For thou art changed, where tact and skill, Have wrought with ever conquering will. A hundred flower decked Springs have fled A hundres Summers sped. A hundred Winters thou has known As brightly still does Spring unfold, As golden is the Summers gold, As red the Autumn's flag unfurl As white the Winter's matchless pearl, As in thy first eventful year The opening of thy long career. God speed thee onward in the light God speed thee onward tward the light May brighter years thy glory be Far flamed Penobscot by the sea. Rev.Harrison Wardwell |
