2009 Annual Town Report The highlight of our year was the day the future general store was moved from the corner of Warf Road and Bayview Road to our grounds on the North Penobscot Road. It was a bright sunny day in May and Many folks came to watch (even the school children joined the gathering). Channel 5 TV came to do a story and it was a day we will always remember. Diligent members have worked tirelessly in recreating the store and I am pleased to say that it looks ahead of schedule. We are hoping for a grand opening sometime in late summer of 2009. We want to thank all those who have donated money, time, and lobor. Without a caring community, this would have never happened. Our association sponsored many of the traditional events mentioned in previous reports. Our Valentine's dinner in February, the Spring Fair in May, followed by Penobscot Days and Touring Thru' Time with a bean hole supper and auction were some of the major events of the year. All were enjoyed by members and the public. Recently, I overheard seveal students at Penobscot Community School discussing how they coulden't wait for Penobscot Days. Iat was a testimonial by an enthusiastic group of youngsters as to the success of the annual event sponsored by the fire department and the society. An interesting display of 50's and 60's memorabilia was organized in the ell of the farmhouse. It brought back lots of memories for many visitors and amusing questions and comments from the younger crowd. We had sixty people attend the last official meeting in October. The draw was Toby Wardwell and Eddy Wardwell who discussed many Native American artifacts they have found over the years. People were so enthusiastic that we may ask them back again. The rear ended with a large change in our previous Christmas gatherings. At the suggestion of member Rose Grindell, weerected a giant Christmes tree in the center of town on property owned by Rebecca Orcutt. A party with food, music and Santa was held at the nearby town hall where over one hundred people attended. We hope this event will be repeated as the positive feedback was overwhelming. We are very proud of Member James E. Grindle, who authored the book, The Back Ridge and Beyond. If you haven't treated yourself to a copy, make sure you do so. It contains local history, interesting personal reflections, and great photos of life on the Back Ridge of Penobscot from the early 1900's to the present. Our monthly meetings begin again in March (always the third Monday at 7:00pm) and all are welcome. Submitted by:, Sylvia L.Tapley President, Penobscot Historical Society |
