For about four hours on the morning of July 19, 1863, the valley around the small river town of Portland, Ohio became the most hotly contested piece of real estate in the United States as John Hunt Morgan and his cavalry were in the fight of their lives against pursuing Union forces.

Today a different stuggle is occurring on the same field. It is a fight to keep the gravel mining industry from desecrating this land and possibly destroying the unmarked graves of veterans.
