Colonel Henry Wilson, founder of the 22nd Mass. Col. Wilson was a U. S. Senator at the time. He later became President Grant's Vice President after the war.

Colonel Jesse Gove of the 22nd Mass. Col. Gove assumed command after Col. Wilson left. He was killed in action at Gaines Mill, July 27, 1862. The Confederate Army took his body; burial place unknown.
