As the author of the booklet, "Mr. Bowie with a Knife" about the sandbar fight and the book, "The Alamo Story," I have done considerable research into James Bowie and Bowie knives. I am skeptical of Rezin's claim that he made the original knife. John J. Bowie, the oldest brother, and close family friend, Caiaphas Ham--who went to Texas with James and fought beside him in the San Saba Indian fight--both credited Lovell Snowden with the first bowie knife, the one used in the sandbar fight. Rezin's claim c me, conveniently, 2 years after the Alamo at a time when the Bowie knife was soaring in popularity. But who can say for sure?

According to some legends, the Bowie Knife made for Jim Bowie by James Black in Washington, Arkansas was balanced in such a way that if thrown in the proper manner, it would make one complete turn for every thirty feet of travel.

According to Mims the original knife was given to the husband of one of the Bowie sisters and lost it while swimming on an expidtion. He apparently assemble a party and made an extensive search for the knife in the waters where it was lost, but it was no found.

I have always been intrigued by the mystery of whatever happened to Jim Bowie's knife after the fall of the Alamo, and what it actually looked like. I hope, one day, this mystery will be solved.

I had heard that Jim Bowie often received credit for what his brother did, the invention of the "Bowie" knife.....although Walt Disney gives credit via Davy Crockett to Colonel Jim Bowie. Mr. B/Fifth Grade teacher

I have viewed parts of your site and have not seen a description with reference to dimensions. Is it possible to forward this information or to put me in contact with someone who knows? My favorite "legend" is that when the knife was thrown, it followed a certain pattern of flight, referring to the number of turns before making contact with a target. Thank You, Tom Howard

Well, did not know this site was out there. I've been a Bowie Knife fan since I was a kid in Monroe,Louisiana. In addition to my work as a Safety/Occupational Health Specialist here w/U.S. Army TRADOC, I also run the martial arts school- The School of Two Swords. Guess what one of my on-going classes teach...That's right Basic Bowie Knife. We use a lot of James Keating's (COMTECH INC)and Hoch Hochheim's (American Knife Congress) teaching materials. Finally got myself a Randall Thorpe B wie. Love it. Having one hell of a time finding a copy of Thorpe's Book The Bowie Knife Again...Enjoyed your site Best Mac.

Hi--I got to this page after reading William C. Davis' Three Roads to the Alamo. Of the three (Crockett's, Travis' and Bowie's) I found Bowie's the most fascinating by far: slave-smuggling, questionable land-deals and much other Old SW stuff prior to th sandbar fight. No real personal connections, though, other than some Mississippi-Louisiana relations and a brother-in-law who collects knives. Love your page and will follow your links.

Interesting page. Was always interested in knives and became quite accomplished at knife and hatchet throwing when growing up. I checked your page while looking into Natchez because I am familiar with the Bowie knife as important to the fronteer movement f the settlers. I wanted to know if the statue of my hero, Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest on a horse is still in the downtown Natchez park? Would you know the name of the park and also if there is or was a Mayflower Hotel downtown. Have fun always. John W.
