The 176th Engineer Group's Aviation Detachment was

deactivated in September 1990. Just months before

the 176th Engineer Group was activated for Desert

Shield/Storm. I need to clarify that the Aviation

detachment had been scheduled for deactivation since

mid 1989. Its members were absorbed by the newly

formed 2-224th Avn Battalion and Detachments

1 and 4 of the 1-132nd Avn (see Below).

The 986th Air Ambulance Company had a distinguished

career. They were utilized on numerous occassions for

state duty: floods and blizzards. They were activated during

Desert Shield to perform Medevac duty at Ft Bragg, NC

and Ft Stewart, GA. Later they were deployed to

Saudia Arabia for Desert Storm. Fortunately their

only evacations in Saudi were Iraqi POWs.

They were deactivated in 1995.

Detachments 1 and 4 of the 1-132nd Avn were part

of a Reconnaissance and Target Acquisition Company. The

parent company was in Kentucky, the battalion headquarters

was in DC. I guess you could say they were on their own.

They worked primarily with the 29th Divarty

(29th Infantry Divisional Artillery). The units were

formed in late 1990 and were deactivated in the late

summer of 1996.
