Obituary of George W. Mears

This came from a local paper in New Jersey. Note that it claims that he was awarded the Purple Heart. However, I have not been able to substantiate this. Medal citations were not among the material I have found, and I do know that he did not wear this on his uniform. He may have been given the medal based on the minor injury he sustained to his hands from the German shells the day he was shot down, in which case he may not have considered the injury significant enough to wear the award (this was not uncommon). I hope to clear this up when I hear back from the Nat'l Personnel Records Center, from whom I have requested my granfather's complete personnel file.
