I was just wondering if I am the only one left of the origanl crew as I was on Harbor Island and assigned to the USS Zellars, before it was Commissioned. I served aboard from the time it was commissioned until I left for discharge in December 1945. Just w ndering what happened to all the guys that were in the 3rd Division and the Gunnery Division? I served in both during my assignment aboard. Sure would love to hear from some of the old guys. We're all in our 70's now, but going strong as of now. Any ans ers???

I would like to add to my old comments, that after the 2nd world war and we got repaired at Long Beach, California. We left and went through the Panama Canal and up the East coast to Norford, Va, where after a short stay that we took the USS Midway on it s shakedown cruise and stopped at Cuba. After the cruise we returned to Norfork and while tugs were pushing the USS Midway up to the pier, we tried to go past them and just as we got behind the tug's they started pushing as hard as they could and pushed s up over to and we took out 35 feet of the dock. We weren't to welcome there after that and I left the ship in December 1945. Anyone remember that?

I was at the commissioning of the USS Zellars in Oct 1944 in Seattle at Harbor Island. Was assigned to the Zellars while awaiting assignment at Treasure Island, California. We all took the train from Oakland to Seattle and aboard on/during/and after commi sioning. I was assigned to the third (3) division and I am in the picture of the third (3) division. I am the second one from the far right hand side on the first (bottom) row. Neeling next to me on my left was my good shipmate, Custer. I was later assign to the gunners crew assigned as gun captian of the right (Starboard side) twin 40MM, just behind the bridge. I was loading the twin 40mm on the left (Port side) just behind the bridge the day we got hit and I was wounded, Paul Wolf, handing me shells was killed. I was taken by small boat to a converted hopsital ship, lifted by strecher onto the converted Victory ship and lowered into the operating room. When I heard that the Zellars was going back to the states, I went and saw any/everyone I could, to get back to her before she left. All of my friends and everything I owned was aboard her. She was something special to all who server aboard her. I'll never forget all the times we had aboard her. The mighty (7), the stolen cheese, the cook that fought on the dock in San Diego, because he said she was the best and wouldn't take it back, the time the Litter Beaver DD came and tied up to the same bouy we were tied to in Pearl and the big fight we had with them when someone from the Zellars asked if they had come up to take on our garbarge. The two cans of beer in Ulithi and I didn't ever drink. (Only just turned 18). The two weeks of barmbarding Okinawa, before the invasion. The time we went to meet the Japanese Battleship Yamato, who was coming to help the Japanese on the Island, with two rusers, and six destoryers and no aircraft carriers. We went to meet them with six (6) battle wagons, twelve (12) crusers, twenty two (22) destoryers and four (4) aircraft carriers. We were glad, but disappointed that the carriers stopped them cold. The o ly one that got away was a cruser, which was sunk in the mouth of the Toko Bay, by one of our subs. Painted on the stack of the Zellars was three (3) sets of dice and each set added up to seven (7). Six and one (6&1), five and two (5&2), and three and four (3&4). We all thought it was a set of real lucky numbers. We all loved this ship and will always remember Her with the greatest of Pride. Would love to hear from anyone that remember to good and bad days of WWII, aboard the USS Zellars. Thanks for a wonderful walk down memory lane.

Served on board the Zellars form April 1960 Jan.1963. Came on board in Portsmith ship yard and departed at Charleston SC. Made two med cruises,Gtmo shake down cruise,Cuban crisis blockade. Remember the hurricane in 1960, main engines out of commision could not get under way. Would enjoy hearing from crew members. The site is great.

I served on Zellars from 1961 to discharge in 1962. I had asked for a DD and BUPERS gave me shore duty in Newfoundland. When I was ready for transfer, I asked for shore duty again and they gave me the "Z" which was what I wanted to begin with. Made a hig er score in Sonar and they sent me to Radio School. Played the rest of my Naval Career like that after I came back in after 8 years of civilian life. Took my wife all over the world before they finally gave me another ship. An AO out of Pearl Harbor (P nchatoula AO-148). I finally found this site for the old girl after looking for the past two and a half years on the Internet. Mighty fine Website. I read every word and saw every picture today. Was on the site for about 3 hours then came back and sho ed it all over again to my wife of 30 years. I have some slides of when I was on the Zellars. I'm going to have them put on disk. If you are interested, I'll send you a copy when I get them back. E-mail me if interested. No charge. FREE! Please don' take the site down. I stole a copy of the patch as I lost mine when my Step-Brother stole my work jacket. Hope you don't mind. Keep up the good work. That was a mighty fast "can" when I was on her. All the carriers called on us for plane guard duty ll the time. Didn't like sitting in the Bermuda Triangle everytime the space shots were happening. Strange things happen out there at times. Loved it when we turned back ships heading for Cuba just before the Cuban Crisis broke out. Got discharged bef re the actual Crisis took place, just barely. (Not more than 2 weeks before) Really loved going on a Med cruise with her. Even got to go through the Suez Canal and 6 weeks in the Red Sea. Sure was hot. That should be enough for folks to read.

In 1958 I dated a girl whose father I believe use to be one of the skipper's of 777 during WWII in the Pacific. I was fond of the navy and ship history and I remember seeing several pictures on the walls of their house of the Zellers and the triple 7's on the hull always stuck in my mind. I recall a late night driving trip back to college with her father who dropped me off on the way to another duty station after visiting the daughter. The father and skipper was Joe Harry Floyd. The last I knew he and his ife Billie use to reside in Charleston, S.C. It would be interesting to know what became of this family.
