Log of action at Guadalcanal-1942

From the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships::
"While Lardner was serving in the screen for TF 18 steaming from the Santa Cruz Islands to Espiritu Santo, aircraft carrier Wasp (CV-7) was torpedoed and sank 16 September. Lardner immediately launched a depth charge attack while her boats picked up 322 survivors debarking them at Espiritu Santo the next day."

From Edward Clarke, USS Lardner DD487::

"Sept 14, 1942
1630 General Q comdr task force reported
launched aircraft attack against
a Jap BBs and 7 CVs and expected an
attack on this task force late afternoon."

"Sept 15, 1942
Wasp was sunk in L 12-20s 164-16-30E
by torpedo. Lardner rescued 302 survivors
Hit at 1451 sunk by torpedoes from
USS Lansdowne at 2130 abandoned
in 1/2 hour after big hit being afire
from amidships to bow. Practically a
constant series of explosions."

One died at 8am next morning"

Note from Louis Clarke, Edward's son,
"Sub I-19 was a deadly shooter and I might add lucky. From 6 Model 95 torpedoes, two hit Wasp, one hit O'Brien, and one hit North Carolina."
