From the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships:: "On 17 and 30 October Lardner headed for Guadalcanal, arriving off Lunga Point at dawn and splashed two enemy planes during attacks shortly thereafter. She then proceeded to her bombardment position and shelled Japanese positions from Kolumbona to Cape Esperance."

"Oct 16, 1942
0630 Oct 16, 1942 Departed Espiritu Proceeded to sea arrival off Northeastern of Guadalcanal Island at 0700 17 Oct and bombarded Jap positions until noon We were bombed by Jap planes at 0800 3 bombs fell about 100 yards on Port Bow Shot down 5 planes out of 13 other ships and shore shot down the rest 100%."
