1st Michigan Engineers and
Mechanics
Mark Hoffman
A three company detachment was at
Mill Springs, having helped move Thomas' column through the mud, etc. They formed a
camp guard during the battle but were not engaged. After the battle they
helped bury the dead and guard prisoners. [See also the letter

Sligh's letter of 1/26 references his conversation with a captured
Confederate Lt. Col., presumably Moscow Carter. Fox's
diary 1/21 contains information about his conversation with Surgeon Daniel Cliffe, who he
said had been forced into Confederate service despite his Ohio roots.
