1st Michigan Engineers and Mechanics

Mark Hoffman

A three company detachment was at Mill Springs, having helped move Thomas' column through the mud, etc.  They formed a camp guard during the battle but were not engaged.  After the battle they
helped bury the dead and guard prisoners.  [See also the letter of Capt. Free, 31st Ohio Infantry]

The following sources contain information about this regiment and Mill Springs:

Diary of Captain Perrin V. Fox, in the Ray Smith Collection, Archives and Manuscript Collections, Seymour Library, Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois.

Letters of Captain James May Sligh to his wife dated 1/17/62 and 1/26/62, in the Sligh Family Papers, Bentley Historical Library, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Letter by O. J. King published in The Marshall Statesman 1/29/62.

Letter by Morgan Parker in the Detroit Daily Tribune 2/4/62.

Letter by Ira Remington in the (Flint) Wolverine Citizen 2/1/62.

Sligh's letter of 1/26 references his conversation with a captured Confederate Lt. Col., presumably Moscow Carter.  Fox's diary 1/21 contains information about his conversation with Surgeon Daniel Cliffe, who he said had been forced into Confederate service despite his Ohio roots.

Mark Hoffman is collecting info on the 1st Michigan Engineers and Mechanics for a regimental history.  Please send all info to him at hoffman5@pilot.msu.edu
