~ Their Story ~

John Eye enlisted as a Private in Co. K, 62nd VA Mounted Infantry. He was brought to Camp Chase in November of 1864 after being captured in a raid near Beverly, WV. and released in June of 1865. He must have been illiterate as his military records noted that he signed the oath of allegiance with an "x". John Eye returned to his family near Franklin, Pendleton County, WV. In 1870 he moved with his family to Iowa, died in 1903, and is buried near Olin, IA.
