Boogie Wrestling Camp |
I am asking my readers to give of themselves, if they can, to help a group of young people go to Japan. They are to be escorted by The Destroyer to wrestle in a huge tournament soon. If you would like to help support this trip in any way, please contact The Destroyer at his website www.thedestroyer.com. I know he would appreciate the kindness, as this are a special group that he is taking to compete. Thank you ... Percival |
As I entered the highway from my daughter Teri's home in Lynchburg, I began to see why Virginia is the most beautiful state. The majestic Blue Ridge Mountains were ahead of me and covered with trees and green foliage. A short time later as I listened to my favorites on the CD I had made for the trip, I pulled off at exit 118c on I-81. Going south on 460 again, I came to Allegheny Springs Road and turned to the right and began the five miles or so up to Boogie and Angel's home. The Boogie wrestling camp was the next driveway I came to, and all the buildings were on the side of the mountain above it. I looked over the sign that read "THE WHITE HOUSE" to see Angel and Boogie coming out to the camp to begin a labor of love with their other family of students. I had a few hugs to get from them and then gave them a hand painted and decorated birdhouse that Nancy had made for them. It had two decals on the front of hummingbirds on either side of the doorway ... one in blue, one in red. The birds were named Boogie and Angel, and above the door was the name VALIANT. We chatted for a few minutes and then headed up the edge of the mountain to the wrestling camp where some of the many students were waiting. After a short roll call and another exchange of hugs and handshakes, the doors were open, and the workout session began. I had the opportunity to meet all of the class of 2003 and some fans that had come to watch the training and the matches. It is really a tribute to Boogie and Angel to give back to their students the years of knowledge they have of the wrestling business. Two of the fans that came were Gerry and John they were on their way to Virginia Tech to demonstrate their products. They are involved in the drink business for the serious athlete. To find out more about this great product, go to www.gfmenterprises.com, and when you do, please mention my name. While I was there at the BWC (Boogie's Wrestling Camp), I was inducted into the Boogie Hall of Fame as one of the first group. My picture and some nice words about me are enshrined in a permanent display that will be officially open to every one that comes there in September of 2003. I stand beside greats like Gorilla Monsoon, Pampero Firpo, Bobo Brazil, The Volkoff Brothers, Steve Austin, The Rock, The Sheik, Sergeant Slaughter, Bobby Managoff and about 100 others. I am very touched that I was thought of so graciously. I will always be in Boogie and Angel's debt for their kindness. I watched matches that pitted students against each other in hand-to-hand combat. The building might be small, but a lot of energy is given by all of the other students as they battle. I was especially impressed by a young man by the name of Southern Storm who used moves and counters I had just talked about to him not 20 minutes before when they were on break. It did my old heart good to see top wristlocks and reverse to hammerlocks and take downs to the mat. Hold and counter holds just like Larry Chene had taught me some 40 years ago. Four o'clock came too quick, and the session was over. One by one they came and thanked me for being there and exchanged hugs and handshakes. They then got into their cars and headed down the mountain towards Shawsville. It was there they turned either to the North or the South and began their journey back to their home. In closing, I have to again thank Angel and Boogie for their hospitality and friendship. Also for the nice gifts that they gave me to return home with. To find out more about them, go to www.jimmyvaliant.com. May God continue to bless and watch over you both and keep you both well. Until we meet again somewhere down the road. Percival A.
