Welcome to my pages
Welcome to my home page and my homesite. My basic purpose in having constructed and in maintaining my site is to be virtually present even where I have to be physically absent.
My pages have a professional orientation. The emphasis is on fields of my research and expertise. Accordingly, their foremost intended users are colleagues, those who may wish to employ services rendered by organisations that employ me and by myself, and PhD and MA students.

In checking on my other web presence I can see that beside the standard pages on my organisational affiliations there are numerous other instances of presence. Lately, a coedited book of mine, Pertti Ahonen and Kari Palonen, ed., Dis-Embalming Max Weber (1999) can be found in particulary many pages. My active role as the founder (1995) and as the director (1995-9, dormant at least in 1999-2000) of one of Finland's 100-odd doctoral graduate schools also seems to have led to a substantial web presence (not linked here due to the Finnish language used in the documents). I am glad as well that my affiliation with the University of Tartu, Estonia, and the Trames journal of the Estonian Academy of Sciences are found on the web.
Othewise for instance studies on European Union questions and the information society seem to have led to web presence. In September, 2000, search engines tended to show my presence in about 100 web sites.

Tervetuloa sivuilleni
Tervetuloa kotisivulleni ja kotisivustooni. Sivustoni tarkoitus on pitää yllä virtuaalista läsnäoloani siellä, missä en voi olla fyysisesti läsnä.
Sivustoni painottaa ammatillisia kysymyksiä eli tutkimusteni ja asiantuntemukseni aiheita. Vastaavasti niiden ensisijaisiksi käyttäjiksi olen tarkoittanut kollegat, minut työllistäviltä organisaatioilta tai itseltäni palveluja hankkivat tahot sekä tohtori- ja maisteriopiskelijat.
Jos vierailet täällä ensi kertaa, pääset parhaiten eteenpäin sivustoni kartastosta. Jos olet vieraillut sivuillani jo ennen, hyödyt myös katsomalla, mitä uutta sivuillani on.
Tarkastellessani Internetistä millä muilla sivuilla olen läsnä huomaan, että tavanomaisten, organisaatiojäsennyksiäni koskevien sivujen lisäksi olen läsnä monilla muilla sivuilla. Erityisesti teos Pertti Ahonen ja Kari Palonen, toim., Dis-Embalming Max Weber (1999) on saanut osakseen viittauksia monilla sivuilla. Roolini erään maamme noin sadasta tutkijakoulusta nimittäin VALHAL:in perustajana (1995) ja johtajana (1995-9, lepäämässä ainakin 1999-2000) on samoin johtanut melkoiseen läsnäoloon verkossa. Olen iloinen, että Internetistä löytyy maininta myös roolistani Tarton yliopistossa Virossa sekä Viron tiedeakatemian Trames-julkaisun toimitusneuvostossa.
Muuten läsnäoloon verkossa näyttävät johtaneet esimerkiksi tutkimukset EU- ja tietoyhteiskuntaaihepiireistä sekä vastaväitokset. Syyskuussa vuonna 2000 hakukoneet osoittavat läsnäoloani yleensä noin 100 eri verkkosivustossa.
