Personality:Very affectionate. Likes to sit in our lap.
Why Did You Choose A Duck As A Pet: Actually we didn't / but has turned out to be a great pet! She had her foot bitten by a turtle in a local pond. My wife, the nurse, treated the injured foot by using an antibiotic ointment and a baby sock held in place by a rubber band. The duck was very comical limping around the yard. She is fully healed and healthy.
How Tamed: Lots of attention.
Diaper Used: None
What Made You Decide To Keep Your Duck Inside: We only let her in the kitchen on occasion. Glad to hear about the diaper thing. Usually I have to be armed with "Brawney"!
Duck's Housing: We have a portable dog kennel in the back yard (10' x 30') with a small doghouse and a plastic swimming pool. We cover the top with chicken wire to keep out the neighbor's cat. When it gets cold in the winter we fix her a place in the garage to keep warm.
Duck's Daily Part In Your Day: We let her out of the kennel and she pics around in the yard while we sit outside, or a grilling out (steaks of course!).
Interesting Thing You Do With Your Duck: Likes to try to fly up in our lap. Follows us around the yard while we are mowing or gardening.
Interesting Thing Your Duck Does: It's kennel is right under our bedroom window. When she hears us talking she starts quacking at us.

Duck's Name: Yoda, Screech, and Sleepy
Owner's Name: Kim
Home Page: N/A
Location: Fredericksburg, VA
Breed: Yoda- cayuga, Screech - rouen, Sleepy- pekin
Color/Markings: Yoda - black, Screech- brown/yellow, Sleepy - yellow
Date of Birth: Yoda - 5/24/01, Screech- 5/27/01, Sleepy- 5/25/01
Date Aquired: The eggs arrived on 4/30/01.
Where/Whom Aquired: I purchased the eggs from a hatchery in PA.
Price: $5/dz eggs ????
Personality:Yoda- very talkative and extremely small (didn't develop correctly in egg), Screech- as the name says...., Sleepy- again, as the name says!
Why Did You Choose A Duck As A Pet: I am a school teacher and last year another teacher incubated duck eggs. I truly love animals, so of course I became involved. Peeps hatched right into my hands! This year, I became involved again, this time incubating the eggs in my room so my students could be a part of this. I have never seen so many fifth grade boys go soft at once! It's been a great experience for me, my family, and my students..
How Tamed: Each of the ducklings were born in my presence. I spend a lot of time with them so they will get used to me. Also, my students participate in handling and caring for them during the day. They are not afraid of people, and they were just introduced to my cats. The cats were more afraid than the ducklings!
Diaper Used: I tried with my previous duck to no avail. I'm going to try again though!
What Made You Decide To Keep Your Duck Inside: Right now they're too young to be outside. Once they have their adult feathers they will stay outside during the day, and inside during the night. I have a kiddie pool and a duck house outside for them. When inside, I bought a large dog crate for them to sleep in.
Duck's Housing: Right now, a rubber maid tub. I'll gradually increase the size of the tub as they grow and eventually use the dog crate.
What Do You Feed Your Duck: As ducklings, I start them on corn meal mash for about 1-2 weeks. Then I'll use wild game grower food, and add Brewer's yeast to it. Once they've reached maturity, I use another wild game food for adults.
Duck's Daily Part In Your Day: They come to school with me every day, and I keep them in a closed room right now until the cats are more accustomed to them. I let them out of their tub at least 6-7 times a day to stretch their legs and bond with me and my students.
Interesting Thing You Do With Your Duck: Taking them to school? I'm also interested in leash training one if not all of them.
Interesting Thing Your Duck Does: Sleepy will run really fast, sit down, and then fall asleep! Sleepy is the sweetest duck! If you hold him, he immediately falls asleep within five seconds flat. Yoda has bald spots and is so little. His little legs move a mile a minute! One of my students plays with him and lets Yoda break dance! Screech has screeched so much in one day that he lost his voice! Other Information: I've owned a duck before, and now I have three ducklings! Peeps, the duck from last year, became my pet because the other teachers released the other ducklings I felt too early, so I ended up keeping Peeps. It was summer time, so I had plenty of time to spend with her. When August came, my schedule became very busy, and she became a bit annoyed with the lack of attention. So, I purchased a dog that was supposed to be a beagle/terrier mix. Unfortunately, he turned out to be a labrador so he ended up killing her, which was natural to him. I enjoyed 6 wonderful months with her, and I highly recommend to anyone who wants a duck as a pet, to get more than one.
