William Shatner 7/30/02 Chat Transcript
For those who had missed it.
KarlSCIFI- All right -- it sure is quiet now. :-)
KarlSCIFI- Let's get this party started!
KarlSCIFI- Good afternoon everyone, KarlSCIFI here for SCIFI.COM. We have a special treat in store for you this afternoon as we chat with a very special guest…
KarlSCIFI- In the world of science fiction, there is one name that brings reverence to even the most die-hard geeks. One man who has shaped the genre for generations to come doing more to legitimize sci-fi than any other. For decades his work has shone with the light of a thousand suns, illuminating the dark and dreary world we live in, bringing joy to millions. Who is this man -this legend- you ask? Ladies and gentleman, the man of whom I speak can only
KarlSCIFI- speak can only be the one and only -- Shatner!
KarlSCIFI- That's right -- we have the one and only William Shatner here in the SCIFI.COM chat. The captain is here to talk to you, the fans about anything and everything. His career speaks for itself and I'm sure you'll have no problem coming up with things to talk about. Don't forget to ask Mr. Shatner about his newest project, WILLIAM SHATNER'S FULL MOON FRIGHT NIGHT on the SCI FI Channel.
KarlSCIFI- Brief word about the drill. This is a moderated chat -- please send your questions for our guest to ChatQ, as private messages. (To send a private message, eith
Shatner- Hello to the audience! Bill's in the room...
KarlSCIFI- So send your questions to ChatQ
KarlSCIFI- What was it like to work with a production company like Full Moon Pictures and Tempe Entertainment?
Shatner- Who's Tempe? I haven't heard of them.
Shatner- The president of Full Moon is Charlie Band, and Charlie is a very prolific producer and a very excitable man, and a very good chooser of horror films.
Shatner- He was terrific to work with, and I also worked with a big giant head. As for Tempe Productions, I wish i could tell you more, but I don't know who they are.
Shatner- ga
KarlSCIFI- So Mr. Shatner, have you ever considered doing a serious science fiction role again? Something not Trek?
Shatner- I helped write and I directed and acted in a science fiction film of my own. It's called Groom Lake, and it's out there right now being sold. Hopefully you'll see it soon.
Shatner- ga
KarlSCIFI- Here is a question about FULL MOON FRIGHT NIGHT
KarlSCIFI- Will Blood Dolls be featured on the new series? That movie kicks!
Shatner- I'm sure Blood Dolls will be, if it's a Full Moon production, and if you think it kicks ass then we'll have to have it on.
Shatner- Ass-kickers are welcome!
Shatner- ga
KarlSCIFI- OK -- this question HAS to be asked--
KarlSCIFI- What does Mr. Shatner think of the new show "Enterprise"?
Shatner- I have never seen Enterprise, although I've heard some wonderful things about it, and certainly our leading man is well-known, and well-respected.
Shatner- ga
KarlSCIFI- What is Fright Night going be about?
Shatner- Fright Night is about horror, both horror of the gasping quality and of the tittering quality... maybe i should explain that further.
Shatner- When you gasp in horror, you've seen something frightening... of course that's what horror's all about. But sometimes you can giggle a little, out of amusement or nervousness, and then we have another type of horror film.
Shatner- On Fright Night, we're gonna have both kinds of horror films.
Shatner- We're gonna be horrified, and we're gonna laugh.
Shatner- Hopefully, you'll choose the moments to laugh when the author and the director meant for you to laugh.
Shatner- Otherwise, the makers of the film will be horrified, and that's not a laugh!
Shatner- But seriously.... Fright Night should be good for two hours of great entertainment. As you know, it's on at 11:00 Saturday nights. So I suggest you get your popcorn and some friends and sit around the television set and have a hoot.
Shatner- ga
KarlSCIFI- Are you a big fan of horror films and is this why you choose to be featured in Fright Night? If you are a big horror fan, how big of a fan are you? What is your favorite horror film?
Shatner- I am a big fan of horror films. The true horror story appeals to our basic nature. I'm sure that primitive man sat around the fireplace and told stories of how he hit the dinosaur on the head and how the snake came around the corner and the fire-breathing dragon flew in from the sky. And the tribe was enthralled.
Shatner- So everybody is a horror fan. Some might not know it, but everybody is.
Shatner- Perhaps one of my favorite horror films is The Exorcist. I mean, there's the devil, there's the possession, there's black shadows, and lots of vomit.
Shatner- True ingredients of a horror film.

KarlSCIFI- How did you hook up with Full Moon, as most of us know, the series has been completed for sometime?
Shatner- Actually the series is just completed, and I was hooked up to Full Moon by shooting Groom Lake.
Shatner- ga
KarlSCIFI- Mr. Shatner -- many people...
KarlSCIFI- are asking if there is
KarlSCIFI- an e-mail address they can write to
KarlSCIFI- to send you fan mail, etc
Shatner- Try my web site, williamshatner.com. It is I think a really good web site, a lot of people have worked on it and we're reaching out to all the fans. I think you'll get a kick out of it.
Shatner- ga
KarlSCIFI- I've seen pictures of you and a big headed guy? Is he your side kick and where did he come from?
Shatner- The big-headed guy whom we call The Big Giant Head is a special effects creation and he makes a perfect foil for me because he doesn't say anything. But he looks a lot. And by the way, there's a guy inside the head, and a guy some yards away from the head. The guy inside the head is getting hot, and the guy outside the head has a number of servo motors at his fingertips. Between the two of them that head says more than I do without using any words.
Shatner- ga
KarlSCIFI- Do you think the current horror films hold a candle to the older ones?
Shatner- Candles, when they're lit, is a perfect horror prop. So you hold a horror candle up to the new type of horror films, and what do you see? You see a lot of great special effects, both digital and practical, but what you really are reacting to is a basic story.
Shatner- In the old days before special effects, everything had to be done on the set, which was somewhat limiting and yet required you to use your imagination. And all you might have is a little candle as a prop, spookily lighting your big giant head.
Shatner- And yet still, you rely on the basic story. When the story is good, you've got a terrific film. When the story is bad, then you've got a problem.
Shatner- That's when you take your candle and creep away.
Shatner- ga
KarlSCIFI- Will whole films be shown? Selected horror films? Or parts of many. I didn't know it was 2 hours (I can't say 2 on TV)
Shatner- Of course whole films will be shown. It's Fright Night. And you can't be frightened by bits and pieces unless it's bits and pieces of mangled bodies.
Shatner- Bleeding on the sidewalk....
Shatner- So be prepared to be frightened on Saturday nights while a lightening storm thunders outside your window and the shutters are rattled and the lights flicker and the candle is blown out.
Shatner- But enough of my problems....
Shatner- ga
KarlSCIFI- Will there be any special guest appearances by other famous horror buffs such as yourself? If not, what horror buff would you like to have on the show?
Shatner- A horror buff would be badly shined shoes.
Shatner- That's a bad joke for a good night's entertainment. We have appearing on our show Roger Corman. We have Stan Lee. We have the casts of some of the films. We have some special effects people, make-up people, and of course we have the Big Giant Head.
Shatner- ga
KarlSCIFI- Matthius> to : Mr. Shatner, How long will Full Moon Fright Night run? is it just for the fall season ,or will it continue to run?
Shatner- Fright Night will run as long as you're watching, as long as you want to see terrific horror films, be informed of some of the history of horror, hear what some other experts in horror have to say... we'll bring you Fright Night.
Shatner- If you stop watching, we'll stop playing.

KarlSCIFI- What Full Moon flicks will be part of FRIGHT NIGHT?
Shatner- Vampire Journals, Puppetmaster, and many of that ilk.
Shatner- If I had printed material in front of me, I'd be able to tell you which films are coming on which night. On the other hand, why don't you tune in and be surprised?
Shatner- ga
KarlSCIFI- Do you prefer the horror genre or the scifi genre?
Shatner- I find both appealing. Horror is both creative and surprisingly it can be very technical. Sci-fi is very technical and not surprising, has to be creative.
Shatner- So the two are very related.
Shatner- But remember, the central core of each of those genres is a good story.
NOTE: This chat was in July. I didn't start looking at FMFN until October, So that's why in the chat Pete don't have a name. He finally got a name in October.
Sincerely
