Withins Reservoir can be reached from the unsurfaced road heading west at the southern end of Elton reservoir, then a short footpath on the left side. Alternatively it is accessible from Bury Road between Bury and Radcliffe, via a track signposted as a public footpath opposite Withins Lane, crossing the Metrolink line and the canal, then continuing as a footpath leading past Crow Trees farm.
Withins reservoir supplied water to a group of smaller reservoirs around a bleach works and calico printing works, between Cross Lane and Church Street East in Radcliffe.

The level control for Withins reservoir is in this circular tower, built of engineering bricks and reached by a steel walkway from the side of the reservoir. The walkway was replaced within the last 20 years so presumably access is still needed.

The staircase of weirs are an overflow from the reservoir. Water from the level control flows into the bottom of this staircase, then along a channel and around Crow Trees Farm (in the background of the next photograph).

After that it flows through the cutting visible in the centre of this photograph and underneath the Manchester, Bolton and Bury canal and the Metrolink line. The stone-lined channel can be seen on the right hand side of the path leading from the Metrolink footbridge to Bury Road. After passing under Bury Road the water flows alongside Withins Lane and Withins Street. Finally it disappears under Cross Lane in Radcliffe, near the site of the reservoirs for the former Tower Works (bleaching & dyeing.)
