The temperature of lightning can be as high as 54,000 degrees farenheit (30,000 degrees celsius) which is six times hotter than the suns surface. Lightning travels between 100 and 1000 miles (160 to 1600 km) a second. Lightning happens because currents of air within clouds cause drops of water to move about and rub against one another, the drops of water get charged with electricity, and then suddenly, electrical charges in one part of a cloud are attracted to electrical charges in another part of the same cloud, or in another cloud, or the ground. Lightning heats up the air, and rumbling sounds of thunder come from the rapidly expanding air.
