Edinburgh - view from Calton Hill
(a great place to get a panoramic view of
the city) |
|
Stirling - view over Forth Valley
from a terrace near the Church of the Holy Rude (see next picture) |
|
Stained glass window in the Church of the
Holy Rude in Stirling |
|
Loch Katrine, The Trossachs - this
is the loch/lake mentioned in Scott's ballad of the "Lady of the Lake".
You can walk or cycle along the lake on a paved road or go on a boat trip
on a steamboat called "Sir Walter Scott" |
|
"On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch
Lomond" - just like in the famous song. This is one of the most popular
lakes in Scotland. Lots of people, especially from Glasgow, spend their
weekends and/or holidays there |
|
Near Rannoch Moor - one of the most
fascinating sceneries I've seen on this trip |
|
Glen Coe - some highland cattle relaxing
despite the hords of tourists that crowd this valley every year to go hiking,
enjoy the spectacular scenery, and learn about one of the saddest stories
in Scottish history, the infamous massacre of Glen Coe in 1692 |
|
View of Glen Garry - isn't this breathtaking? |
 |
Loch Cluanie - a nice place for a
little walk, with no tourists in sight! ;o) |
 |
Eilean Donan Castle - one of the
most famous castles in Scotland. You might recognize it if you've seen
"Highlander" (the movie) |
|
Near Sconser, Isle of Skye. The island
is by far the most beautiful place I've seen in all of Europe, and very
popular among hikers. You can find many many trails there and even climb
some mountains! |
|
Beneath the old stone bridge in Sligachan,
Isle of Skye |
|
Talisker Distillery, Carbost, Isle
of Skye - they say that the whisky produced here is among the best in the
world. I didn't taste it though because I don't like that stuff... |
|
Rhododendrons in Carbost - I had
never expected to see so many blooming plants in Scotland! Sometimes the
colors are just incredible |
|
On our way to Talisker Bay - a wonderful
30-minute hike which takes you to a beautiful pebble beach from which you
can see the Outer Hebrides. |
|
On the same hike to Talisker Bay,
just in the other direction... Note the many flowers blooming along the
trail! |
|
View from the West Coast of Trotternish
Peninsula, Isle of Skye. Somtimes blue (the ocean), green (the grass),
and white - more or less - (the sheep) are the only colors you'll see... |
|
"Coral Beaches" near Dunvegan, Isle
of Skye - you will find some nice white sandy beaches here, but no corals.
The name is derived from the algae which color the water there. A nice
place to find sea shells and other stuff! |
 |
Near Dunvegan Castle, Isle of Skye (can you spot the castle on the picture?).
This is said to be the oldest inhabited castle in Scotland and can be visited
(not cheap though!). We didn't do that because it was such a beautiful
day better to be spent outside, and instead took a walk to the famous Coral
Beaches (previous picture) |
|
Uig, Isle of Skye. The cute little
house with the red roof is the B&B we stayed at. The ferries for the
Outer Hebrides leave here in Uig harbor |
|
View from The Quiraing, Isle of Skye.
A great place to hike and admire some fascinating rock formations, but
be careful what you step into (there are lots of sheep in that area)! |
|
The Old Man of Storr, another fascinating
rock formation on the Isle of Skye, easily accessible by a trail which
offers great views (see next picture) |
|
One of the beautiful views along the trail
leading to the Old Man of Storr |
|
The harbor in Portree, Isle of Skye.
We had some great fish & chips here, though the seagulls got a great
part of the chips because it was too much for one person to eat... |
|
View over Loch Ness in the early
morning. Can you spot Nessie? If not, have a few glasses of whisky, that
might help! ;o) |
 |
Church in Pitlochry, a nice little
town visited by lots of old people... It also has a famous dam with a fish
ladder where you might be able to spot some salmon. If you decide to have
lunch here, don't go to Luigi's - we had to wait over 30 minutes for an
incredibly expensive pizza that didn't even taste good... :o( |
|
The famous Queen's View, Loch Tummel.
You'll see a similar picture in just about any travel guide about Scotland! |
|
The cathedral at Dunkeld - from the
old part of the church, only the outer walls and some grave slabs remain,
but it is a beautiful place on the banks of the Tay River, surrounded by
lots of rhododendrons |
|
Tay River and the old stone bridge seen
from Dunkeld cathedral |
|
St. Andrews Castle. This nice, but
expensive town is world-famous for being the birthplace of Golf. To play
at the Royal & Ancient golf course, you'll have to meet the strictest
requirements! |
|
The quaint little fishing village of Crail,
along the Fife Tourist Route. Nice, but a bit smelly... |
