Cocoon
You awoke this day inside a cocoon
The world you've known is changing soon
Butterfly, time for you to emerge
Life's hard lessons must be learned

A pivotal moment, a critical path
A sudden collision of future and past
Your safety helmet has broken away
You're going to grow up fast today

Jump rope, hopscotch, songs to sing
were not part of your daily routine
Still, you've the tender heart of a child
The need for someone to hold you awhile

Dad's not around like he used to be
Mom's in her own cocoon of grief
Broken and bleeding, you're left alone
You'll have to find healing on your own

Butterfly, time to spread your wings
and rise above these painful things
The world looks different from on high
Watch the ugliness fade from sight

Grown up in ways, yet still so green
You fly along trying to forget what you've seen
Your turtleshell guard may make you seem hard
But just 'neath the surface is that tender heart

Now in the garden with your own flower bud
You shade her from the midday sun
You want these days for her blossom to last
So she won't have to grow up too fast.
Sometimes circumstances push us into adulthood before our years would dictate...
