ON THE INSIDE
Your choices have landed you in a cell
You write and tell me you're doing well
You're on a better path, you say
Looking forward to brighter days

Well, pardon my suspicion and disbelief
I'm still stinging from the grief
and torment that you put me through
Frankly, I'm glad to hear from you

Maybe I can finally relax
Not wondering if you're behind my back
I can stop looking over my shoulder now
It's a relief to know you're not around

So tell me, what's it like inside
Is it comfortable there where you reside?
Surely, it's better than living on the street
At least you know where you'll eat and sleep

Is the element of fear any greater there?
Do you feel protected, or are you scared?
You say you value your freedom more
Just remember, with freedom there are choices galore

Right now you're limited in what you can do
Many of your choices are made for you
But look out when you get your freedom restored
The decisions then will all be yours

So tell me, what's it like inside
In the quiet darkness every night?
Are you haunted by your past misdeeds?
or do you drift into peaceful sleep?

Tell me, what's it like inside
Have you faced the truth, or do you hide?
Are you broken?  or filled with hollow pride?
Are you still believing your self-told lies?

The outside looks the same from here
I see no difference in how you appear
The truth, the lies were never clear
Why should I believe that you're sincere

I suppose the truth will not be known
until you're out and on your own
Outside those walls is where you'll find
what it's really like on the inside
