From the Garden: - pine cone - fresh sticks, twigs, small segments of thick branches - rocks - nuts, acorns, seeds - a variety of plants: roots and all (flowers, clovers, dandelions...) (make sure there are no insects on the plants; butter cups are poisonous to hamsters) - leaves from plants or trees: fresh or dry From the House: - cardboard box - corrugated cardboard sheets or 3D shapes (normally used for packaging) - plastic container (if your hamster starts to chew it a lot, remove it) - tin or cardboard can (remove sharp edges; Pringle's cans are great) - clean sock: remove the elastic first!!!!! (hide food in it or give it to your hamster for bedding: your hamster may snuggle up inside!) - crocheted square - cuttle fish bone - empty tissue box with the plastic removed |
Here is a list to give you ideas of the types of things hamsters like to explore. Some items may only be able to be used once, as your hamster may eat them after they have been explored! The large items should only be placed in big cages, or put in an arena. Be careful! These are just generalized examples! You must check that the item is either organic or without toxic ink and glue before your give it to your hamster. Fresh items should not contain pesticide, as your hamster may just decide to eat it. |
