About Rainbow Pony Club

What is Pony Club?

Pony Club is part of a national organization (United States Pony Clubs) that is dedicated to teaching riding skills and horse management to youth under the age of 21. The core of USPC is the local club. USPC supports the ideal of a thoroughly happy, comfortable horseperson, riding across a natural country, with complete confidence and and perfect balance on a horse or pony equally happy and confident and free from pain or bewilderment.

USPC's Mission Statement

The mission of the United States Pony Clubs is to provide a program for youth that teaches riding, mounted sports, and the care of horses and ponies, thereby developing responsibility, moral judgment, leadership, and self-confidence.

About Rainbow Pony Club

Rainbow Pony Club is in the Southern California region of USPC. We are located at Willow Glen Equestrian Centre in El Cajon. In order to participate, Pony Clubbers must pay national, regional, and local dues, and a quarterly grounds and maintenance fee. Parents play a big role in Pony Club; without their help, it would not be possible.

The core of our program is the working rally, or mounted meeting. Club members come to these meetings with their mounts for riding lessons, horse management instruction, mounted games, or other activities. We also hold unmounted meetings. Local clubs may send teams of riders to local, regional, or national "competitive rallies" in combined training, show jumping, dressage, mounted games, and the tetrathlon (riding, running, swimming, and marksmanship). Teamwork, horse management, good horsemanship, and good sportsmanship are just as important as performance.

There are nine levels in Pony Club, called "ratings." Members start out as "unrated." They learn at their own pace and take the test for each rating when they are ready. Each rating includes riding tests (in the ring, in the open, and jumping), stable management, and oral testing. Testing for the first five ratings (D-1, D-2, D-3, C-1, and C-2) is done by local examiners. The C-3 rating is done by regional examiners, while the three higheset levels (B, H-A, and A) are national ratings tested by national examiners. They require a high degree of skill, knowledge, and horsemanship experience.

Joining

To join Rainbow Pony Club, a child must be under 21 years of age as of January 1 of the current year. RPC does not provide mounts; members are responsible for their own. A Pony Club mount may be either a horse or pony. Horses and ponies used must be at least five years old, and may not be stallions. At the minimum, members should have an ASTM/SEI approved riding helmet and shoes with heels and no heavy tread. If you are interested in joining, please contact Robert Russel at (619)588-0860. We look forward to meeting new members!
