Remote Controlled Basket Ball
Revision 7 is a larger diameter aluminum chassis.  It is directly attached to a basketball shell.  THIS DESIGN is what I sold to the Harlem Globetrotters.  It still has gyro stability control,   all metal gear high torque steering servo, 2.5Ghz radio system and geard motor drive for higher speeds.  All RC components including the gyro and ESC are available at your local hobby shop.  All robotics such as aluminum hubs, shafts, bearings, gear motor, servos, mounts, screws etc are available at servocity.com.
Here is a sketch blueprint of the ball. Same sketch as Revision 7 just bigger and directly attached to the Basketball shell.
Here is the top half of the basketball shell.  It is a real basketball silicone glued to a plastic hemisphere.  It is held in place over the aluminum chassis which will be attached to the lower half of the basketball.
Here is the lower half of the basketball attached to the chassis and rotating group.  You can see the gyro (gold round piece in the middle) Red power switch, gear drive motor on the right, and radio receiver on the left.

I bent the chassis hoops by hand, machined the spacer spindle and cut, bolted and shaped all other pieces from aluminum stock.

Here's a pic of he pivoting steering cradle.  You can see it's screwed to the servo horn.  I used 1/4" Ball bearings for the other side to pivot on.  At the bottom of the cradle is what make the ball move ... weight.  I used 5 Sub-C cell NiMh batteries along with 10 ounces of lead for weight.  The ball half is screwed and glued to the aluminum chassis hoops.  This is the
Here's a picture of the ESC (Electronic Speed Control).  It's self adjusting and reversible.  It's rated at 320A which is way overkill but it shouldn't overheat.
Here is the ball allput together.
