Here's my new project.  It's a 1969 Mercedes 280SE Coupe.
First, the engines:
Here's a picture of the engine block before I started.
Clich here to see my next page of the car.
The block was bored to 30 over ($500), the crankshaft was built up with chrome and ground to standard dimensions by Chrome Craft (over $1100).  Here's a picture of the primered block with the oil pump, crankshaft, pistons, rods, and main caps all torqued to spec.  I used plastigauge on all bearings to make sure I had .0015" clearance.  Of course all new bearings, seals and rings were used.
Here's a picture of the engine with painted and plugged block, intermediate aluminum oil pan and lower oil pan all torqued.
The head was professionally rebuilt with new seals, guides, valve job etc ($500).   The cam main bearing areas were built up with chrome and ground at Chrome Craft ($400).  Here's a picture with head, cam supports, oiler tube new timing sprocket new timing chain, distributer driveshaft plate, harmonic ballancer and main pullley installed and torqued to spec.  NEW parts include all 4 timing gears, timing chain, chain guides, valve seals and head gasket.
The next step was to put number 1 piston at TDC of firing cylcle, line up the marks for the timing sprocket and install the chain, idler sprockets and tensioner sprocket.  Once that's set, I installed the rocker arms and holder springs and adjusted the valve clearance.
Then I timed and installed the mechanical fuel injection pump, injectors and supply tubes.
I sand blasted the aluminum valve cover, painted it and installed it with the new seal.
I had a buisy week working on the motor.  I added the flywheel, tranny plate, oil filter, NEW motor mount, power steering filter, water temp sensor, oil pressure sensor ...
... power steering pump and reservoir, water pump with bracket and tensioner rod, NEW thermostat and housing, alternator with bracket and tensioner rod, NEW motor mount and a few NEW hoses.
Well, the engine is ready to go in the car.
