Information and notes: parents Frank and Anna
Papers from a purchase of land by cousin John Flajnik give the names of
Frank and Anna, as well as Anna's date of death.
The untimely death of Anna is further confirmed by a child of John, who
heard that she drowned in a washtub or something like that (I think).
All family sources agree as to Frank's name. The U.S. Census records, taken
together, suggest a birth year of 1881 for Frank and 1884 for Anna.
A birth record for a Frank Flajnik in the correct relationship, according to
John Flajnik, has been confirmed as having the correct date by Frank
Flajnik's last surviving son. Copies of Frank's birth/baptismal certificate
are held by several family members. It was issued by the archdiocese of
Ljubljana on request for a small fee.

Information and notes: daughter Mary
Mary's married name, Yazvac, was given in the obituary of sister Anna.
It has been since confirmed by one of John's sons, as well as Frank's last
surviving son (her younger brother). In the 1930 U.S. Census, she is given
the middle initial 'E.'
Yazvac being a rather rare last name, I looked it up in the Social Security death
index. There was only one Mary Yazvac old enough to match. Her death year
has been confirmed by Frank's last surviving son (her younger brother).

Information and notes: son Frank
There is no reason to believe that Frank went to New York.
However, there is no reason to believe that he stayed in the Beaver valley
region, or that he lived long enough to be in the online Social Security
Death Index. A summer birthdate fits better in the
pattern of births than a fall birthdate, but both are acceptable.
As you can see, Frank is simply too common a name in the Flajnik family.
In the 1930 U.S. Census, Frank is listed as "Frank W." and he is listed as
absent; his occupation is "soldier" in the navy.

Information and notes: daughter Anna
The source for the information on Anna basically comes from her obituary,
which appears in the Allegheny / Beaver County Times. Her birth year was
corrected based on her presence in the 1910 U.S. Census, taken in April.

Anna (daughter) |
Sources & Notes |
name
|
Both her obituary and the 1930 U.S. Census give "Anna H."
|
birth date
|
Anna's obituary gives her birth date as December 18, 1910.
However, Anna is listed in the 1910 U.S. Census. While the U.S. Census is
known for errors, especially with respect to names and ages, it would have
simply been unreasonable for the family to give the name of a child recently
conceived. The enumeration date is May 14, seven months before her birth.
It seems reasonable that the person writing the obituary for this 93-year
old lady would have been off by a year, particularly considering her
birthday was in December. However, there is no reason to believe any other
information in the obituary is wrong. A birth month of December 1909 is in
full agreement with the 1910 Census, which gives her age as 4/12.

Information and notes: ?
With a relatively complete set of birth dates for the family and the
observation of the relative regularity and reasonable fertility, one
surmises that there is a missing child here, perhaps a miscarriage, but
more likely a stillborn or infant death. (possibly a childhood death, but
one would expect the family to have known about it, then)
This child would have been born in 1912, most likely.
This child is not mentioned in Anna's obituary, nor does the child appear
in the 1920 U.S. Census. (So you could say I am speculating.) In fact,
Anna's birth year being moved up to 1910 may have been an effort to even out
the irregularity here; if that is the case, the obituary writer must have
been completely ignorant of this child.

Information and notes: daughter Katherine
Katherine was known to John's son and Frank's last surviving son (her
younger brother).
|
Katherine (son) |
Sources & Notes |
name
|
She is listed under the more English spelling 'Catherine'
in the U.S. Census (both 1920 and 1930).
Katharine or Katharina is the usual German spelling; this was probably more
familiar because Slovenia, her parents' homeland, was part of the Austrian
Empire at the time. She was known to family and friends as Katie.
Both the Social Security Death index and the 1930 U.S. Census give
the middle initial 'A.'
|
birth and death dates
|
Birth and death dates come from the Social Security Death
Index. The correct Katherine or Catherine was identified by means of her
year of death, provided by Frank's last surviving son (her younger brother).
Also, the death location (Rochester) is a nearby location where members of
the family were known to have lived (according to John's youngest son). The
spelling of the name also matches her sister's obituary, and her middle
initial, the U.S. Census.

Information and notes: son Michael
Michael was known to John's son and Frank's last surviving son (her
younger brother).
|
Michael (son) |

name
|
He is listed in the 1930 U.S. Census as "Michael V."
I have no confirmation for this middle initial.
He was known to family and friends as Mike.
|
birth date
|
Birth date comes from the age given in the
1920 and 1930 U.S. Censuses.
|
Information and notes: son Rudolph
The only record with Rudolph is the 1920 U.S. Census.
The absence of Rudolph in the 1930 U.S. Census, when he is but 11 or 12
years old, as well as his absence in Anna's obituary, suggests that he died
in infancy or childhood. It is not clear that the obituary writer was
completely ignorant of Rudolph, since such childhood deaths are often not
included.

Information and notes: son Jack
Jack was known to John's son and Frank's last surviving son (her
younger brother). He never married.
