Carnivorous plants
There's just something really cool about carnivorous plants.  May be it's the sense of "fair play".  Afterall, there are all those animals out there eating the plants, seems only right that there would be plants that feed on animals.

My cp [carnivorous plant] collection is actually quite small.  If I was living in a house instead of an apartment it would likely be quite a bit larger.  In some cases, I'm still figuring out what their requirements are.  Most of my cps are in some sort of enclosed terrarium.  Thus far I have found venus flytraps to be one of the most difficult types to keep alive -- mainly due to finding a way to accomodate their dormancy needs.

Pictures of my "pets" can be seen below.  If you would like to see a bigger picture of one just click on its thumbnail.  To get back to my homepage or to another plant photo page, you can use the links at the bottom of this page.

Same plant but the pitcher on the right is on an older plant.
Venus Flytraps
Venus flytraps have proven to bit a bit of a challenge for me.

So far I've had the best success growing vfts in a 6 inch clay pot filled with peat moss with a layer of sphagnum moss on top of the peat.   I've had to start over again since the squirrels destroyed my last ones.
Pinguicula -- Butterworts
Darlingtonia california --Cobra Lilies
Pinguicula primaflora
This is another challenging cp -- at least for me.  I've read about set-ups some successful growers use but don't have the room or the money to duplicate their set-up.  I had two of these.  One was in a terrarium and hung in there for years.  The other was a division from the one in the terr.  I planted it in a 6 inch clay pot & put outside over the summer.  It grew quite a bit better than the one in the terrarium.  Then a critter dug it up and it was gone.  The portion left in the terr died shortly there after.
I've had this species a couple times now.  For me it blooms its head off then dies.  Haven't quite figured out what it needs for it to last longer.
