THE SCREENWRITER

Clodualdo Agnis del Mundo, Jr. aka Doy b. Manila 11 March 1948

Movie scriptwriter, filmmaker, teacher, Clodualdo del Mundo, Jr. is the son of Clodualdo del Mundo Sr, essayist and fictionist, and Iluminada Agnis. He is married to Dreena Quito. They have one child, Ida Anita.

He finished a bachelor of arts degree at the Ateneo de Manila University, cum laude, in 1968. He has a masteral degree in radio-television-film at the University of Kansas, 1974 and a doctoral degree in communication studies at the University of Iowa, 1994. He headed the communication arts department of De La Salle University from 1975 to 1985. He was a founding member and former chair of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, and vice-president of the Screenwriters Guild of the Philippines.

Del Mundo won his first Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) award as a scriptwriter in 1975 with his screen adaptation of Edgardo Reyes' novel, Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag directed by Lino Brocka. A series of notable screenplays followed, including Mike de Leon's first film Itim 1976, with co-writer Gil Quito; Sa Piling ng Mga Sugapa, 1977; 'Merika, 1984, again with Gil Quito starring Nora Aunor; and with Herky del Mundo, an unproduced script, Alyas Raha Matanda, 1977, based on the life of Filipino hero, Macario Sakay. Del Mundo teamed up again with Mike de Leon and Raquel Villavicencio to produce the screenplays for such award-winning movies as Kakabakaba Ka Ba ?, 1980, Kisapmata, 1981, and Batch '81, 1982. Batch '81 won the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) and Urian awards for best screenplay. Kisapmata won best screenplay at the Metro Manila Film Festival. (MMFF). He wrote Mike de Leon's Aliwan Paradise, part of the omnibus film Southern Winds, 1993 produced by Japan Foundation and NHK.

Del Mundo has directed documentary films like People Media, 1978 and Lupa, 1982, and has written Writing for Film , 1983, and Philippine Mass Media : A Book of Readings, 1986, published by the Communication Foundation for Asia. Three of his screenplays have been anthologized in a book published by De La Salle, entitled Maynila..., 'Merika, Alyas Raha Matanda, 1992.
