Mangosteen the holistic fruit

Mangosteen is a fruit which has quickly made a name for itself on the holistic market, as well as on the weight loss market; and it has been incorporated into many products and also used on its own, in products such as Adam's 100% Mangosteen Juice.

The Mangosteen grows in tropical climates, where it is called “the Queen of fruits The Mangosteen is a rather odd looking fruit with a purple rind, whose flesh is edible, although the seeds must be cooked before they can be eaten. Mangosteen juice has made its way into the holistic health market, because of its purported healthful benefits. It has enjoyed a long history in folk medicine of being useful in the treatment of wounds, skin infections, and diarrhea. Research studies have shown that this fruit can stop the growth of certain bacteria’s and fungi’s. It has also been shown that Mangosteen’s chemical make up does contain xanthones, which is a group of elements that are antioxidants, as well as having other strong physiological properties. However, Mangosteen has been suggested by many retailers and product developers to be a possible cure or aid for a variety of ailments, including weight loss, however, these claims have not been substantiated by clinical trials.

The edible fruit is deep reddish purple when ripe. Although available in cans and frozen, mangosteens are rarely sold fresh in Western countries except rarely in some Asian grocery stores; they are illegal to import without fumigation as whole fruit into the United States due to fears that they harbor the Asian fruit fly which would devastate US crops if it were ever introduced. In the future new irradiation techniques may allow importation of this delicacy. Although there are grown in Hawaii.
