The Impact Test

The South Florida Building Code requires that every exterior opening in your house or business, be provided with protection against flying debris caused by hurricane winds. Such protection could either be shutters or impact resistant products.

There are two types of impact resistant products:

1) Large Missile Resistant

2) Small Missile Resistant

Large Missile resistant: A product that has been exposed to various impacts with a piece of lumber weighing approximately 9 lbs. And 2" x 4" x 6' in size, traveling at a speed of 50 feet per second (34 mph). The product is then subjected to hurricane loading ranging from 1342 to 9000 wind cycles.

Small Missile resistant: A product that has been exposed to various impacts with 30 pieces of roof gravel traveling at a speed of 80 feet per second ( 50 mph ). The product is then subjected to hurricane loading ranging from 1342 to 9000 wind cycles.

Which product do you need ?

If you live in a building where your doors and windows are located 30 Ft or less from ground level, then you
must install products that are large missile impact resistant.

If you live in a building where your doors and windows are located above 30 Ft. above ground level, then you must install products that are either large missile resistant or small missile resistant.
