The Clever boys trick the Maulers

Durban - Wits University overcame a shaky first half and a one-goal deficit to earn three points against Manning Rangers in a Castle Premier League soccer match at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban on Friday night.

Wits returned home 2-1 winners after trailing 1-0 at half-time.

The visitors started brightly, but failed to capitalise on their early opportunities, created by strikers Job Magalefa and William Qaba.

Rangers were awarded a penalty in the 15th minute after referee Harry Lekitlane adjudged defender Gordon Ewan to have handled the ball in the box.

Rangers defender Helder Muianga struck the ball into the left corner.

In the second half, Wits coach John Lathan brought on midfielder Robert van Rijkel for Chicco Lawrence.

The substitute almost scored in the 64th minute when he lobbed the ball goalwards with goalkeeper Grant Johnson stranded out of his box, but the ball struck the crossbar before being cleared by a defender.

The equaliser came in the 79th minute when defender Dan Malesela released Josta Makgala down the right flank and his cross eluded the defence and the goalkeeper for the ball to sail into the far corner of the net.

Two minutes later striker Magalefa earned his team the three points when he beat a defender to leave Rangers without a win in four matches. - Sapa
