Government of the Taqamkuk Mi'kmaw

The Government of the Mi'kmaq of Eastern North America has existed as an institution since time immemorial. It consists of a K'jisaqamaw (grand chief) and seven district chiefs. (See also http://www.mikmaq.net/english/index.html under Government). Unamaki (Cape Breton) and Ktaqamkuk (Newfoundland) came under the jurisdiction of one district chief until 1860 when Ktaqamkuk came into its own as a seperate district under the cheiftanship of Muli's Olibia (Maurice Louis).

The Traditional Government of Taqamkuk is led by Saqamaw Misel Joe.

Miawpukek Mi'kamawey Mawi'omi

Supplementing the Traditional Government of KTAQAMKUK, Local First Nations, sometimes elect a a non-native style of government based on the Canadian model, with some or no deference to the Indian Act.
