It might start with just one drink, but alcohol has effects adverse enough to spin your whole world around....

ALCOHOL: | ||||||||||||
One of the most exciting aspects of growing up is experimenting and basically trying things that are new to you. During this time, one of the most common things for a teen to do is to try alcohol, with varying volumes of consumption and different effects too. However, alcohol isn't advised to be your drink of choice, as it has more adverse than helpful effects on you and your body. Even if you're an adult, alcohol should be consumed only in minimal doses. The only reason why people don't generally go on about the harmful effects of alcohol when you're an adult is because it's legal for an adult to drink. in most countries, the legal drinking age is 21, but in Singapore, it is 18. However, it must be noted that the younger you start drinking, the more the alcohol will affect you and your health as you get older. |

JUST SAID NO | ||||||||||||
Yes, we know it sounds really easy to ask you to say "No" to a drink, but it really isn't as difficult as you think. We do acknowledge that there is a lot of pressure involved in doing so, especially when all your friends are drinking and they want you to join in. You don't want to seem like a party pooper and spoil everyone's fun by ordering a fruit punch, right? Worse still, you don't want them teasing you for the next week about what a "soft" drink you ordered over the weekend. Before all these thoughts go running through your head, remember that the only person who can make decisions about your life is you and no one else. Be your own person and make your own decisions. While having an alcoholic drink might seem like the perfect way to get away from the stresses of home, school or work, it isn't the right way to do so. And, if you think that the only way to get your friends to like you is by drinking with them, these friends are definitely not worth even a minute of your time. |

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? | ||||||||||||
How strong an alcoholic drink is depends on its alcoholic content. Beer usually has between 3% to 5% alcohol, depending on the brand. Wine is a little stronger, with between 9% to 16%, while hard liquor - such as whiskey, brandy and vodka contains up to 50% alcohol, the strongest of them all. The legal blood level of alcohol in most countries is 0.08%. But this legal limit is lower for those under 21, going to as low as 0.02%. What this equates to is one or two beers an hour for a man who weighs 160 pounds, or less than one beer in an hour for a woman who weighs 120 pounds. Once you're over this legal limit, you are considered "under the influence", intoxicated or, simply, drunk.
EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL Apart from the legal implications, there are also various other reasons why you shouldn't pick up the alcohol habit. Alcohol is essentially a drug and, once you start drinking, you will get addicted to it. And, like any other drug, it changes the way both your mind and body works, with effects such as making your reactions slower. You will also become more confused and it basically makes it difficult for you to do anything that requires concentration and coordination. That is why it isn't wise to drive after you've had a drink. You will also notice a change in your behavior after consuming alcohol. It makes you let go of all your inhibitions and you will find yourself doing things that you wouldn't normally do. Sure, it might make you the life and soul of the party and perhaps give you the courage to talk to the cute guy/girl you've been eyeing all night. But this is just the mild version of what could happen. Having too much alcohol might result in you having sex before you're ready or thinking you can make it home in one piece by yourself, when you can barely walk three steps at a time. Many have sworn that they'd never be in such a situation but, sadly, some of them have never lived to tell the tale. Other effects of alcohol include weight gain, vomiting and stomach ulcers. Make no mistake - alcohol ruins your health slowly but surely and you damage your health every time you have a drink. Drinking too much too fast can result in alcohol poisoning, which can even lead to death in worst scenarios. You might think that you would never get to such a serious stage, but do keep in mind that everyone who has had a problem with alcohol started with just one drink. It's just one beverage that leads to a downward spiral of drunkenness and the only way to avoid it is to not even start with that one drink. Trust us, your body will thank you. |
