Knots
Knot tying is one of the oldest construction methods.   From buildings, to fishing, to hunting and gathering, every human invention was first made using knots.   The Aztecs used knots as written language in great wreths of tied information.   I love knots.  Now there are ratchet straps and zip ties to replace the clove hitch, constrictor knot, and trucker's hitch.   But I still like knots.   I always carry rope around with me.   It is my security blanket in many ways.     I taught some knot tying classes and they are always loads of fun.   People love to learn knot tying.
Knots fell out of favor among the population of America when good rope became harder and harder to find.   Now about the only rope you can find in hardware stores is polypropelene, a stiff thick braded rope that does not accept knots well.   You have to go to outfiting stores (not urban outfiters or sports authority) in order to find decent rope.
